Title: Research Analyst - Cancer Surveillance Section

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must work and live in the state of Michigan



Purpose: This position provides support to the development and coordination of research studies within the Research and Data Requests Unit of the Cancer Surveillance Section. It is the duty of this position to collaborate with medical professionals, state programs, local programs, partners, universities, and health/vital records data collection registries. This position supports internal and external evaluation efforts of research that improve education for the individuals requesting cancer data and builds agency capacity for increased research studies and its use for decision making and establishing division-wide strategic goals.This position collaborates with public and private organizations to assist in the development of health care projects/studies, human subject studies, initiatives, and resources that address communication, awareness and education. This position assists with the recommendation for approvals for research, and the coordination and dissemination of materials, reports, and other communication resources to support and improve cancer research, prevention and control.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides consultation to and assists with the coordination of the Internal Review Board (IRB), Compliance, and Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) partnership activities.
  • Assists in developing recommendations for final approval decisions, by seeking feedback from program offices, Section Manager and/or the executive leadership, following up with feedback, and communicating to partners.
  • Administer and evaluate results/findings from required updates from research partners and ongoing research findings, including sharing results with executive leadership and program offices, garnering feedback, and questions, compiling these discussions, sharing with researchers, and scheduling/facilitating follow up conversations as needed.
  • Recommend criteria, standards, guidelines and topics for the Cancer Surveillance Section research agenda.
  • Assists with the development and recommendation of alternative state and division strategies, tools, and processes to support evaluation efforts across DVRHS.
  • Evaluates contracts for compliance with division policies and procedures related to program plans and budgets; recommends needed revisions.
  • Aide in the design and development of registry protocols and documents as needed/necessary for conduct of registry activities within statewide parameters for special studies as needed.
  • Aide in reviewing documentation for research data requests, including Data Use Agreements, Data Sharing Agreements, Study Protocols, and research proposals.
  • Attend all required in person and virtual meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, as well as registry collaborations and sharing of ideas and information with department and key stakeholders.
  • Prepare and distribute correspondence, recruiting materials, and other contacts as necessary to carry out specific research projects.
  • Aide in tracking all registry correspondence related to data for approved research studies, including mailing/survey responses.
  • Aide with contacting approved research study participants for recruitment purposes via phone or mail.
  • Always represent the best interest of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree is required.

Experience: One year of professional experience.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Position is designated as sensitive requiring security clearance and background check prior to hire. The Research Analyst position is located in Lansing, MI and is housed in the Office of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics (DVRHS). Request for remote worksite agreements require supervisor approval. If the remote work schedule agreement is approved by supervisor, the incumbent must be available to work onsite at the Office as needed and/or as required by supervisor for conduct of research unit operations. The incumbent will not be compensated for using personal equipment or receive reimbursement for travel and meals if the remote work site agreement is approved and the incumbent is required to report to the Office.
