Winston-Salem State University is seeking energetic, knowledgeable, and passionate
Group Exercise Instructors to join the Campus Recreation team. This position is responsible for planning and leading safe, engaging, and effective group fitness classes that encourage healthy lifestyles and support the overall well-being of the
WSSU community.
The ideal candidates will create an inclusive and motivating environment for participants of all fitness levels while promoting proper exercise techniques, participant safety, and adherence to Campus Recreation policies and procedures. Hourly pay will be dependent on the type of classes taught and the certifications the candidate possesses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and instruct group fitness classes in assigned formats, including but not limited to: Yoga, Cycling, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Strength Training, Zumba, Pilates, Boot Camp, Other specialty fitness classes.
- Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, and exercise modifications to accommodate participants of varying fitness levels and physical abilities.
- Foster a positive, welcoming, and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation and supports individual fitness goals.
- Monitor participants throughout each class to ensure proper exercise technique and safe participation.
- Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled classes.
- Maintain attendance records and submit required participation reports.
- Ensure fitness equipment is used safely, properly maintained during class, and returned to designated storage areas upon completion.
- Report participant concerns, equipment maintenance needs, and facility issues to supervisory staff.
- Maintain current professional certifications and remain informed of emerging fitness trends and industry best practices.
- Assist with campus wellness events, fitness assessments, special programs, and promotional activities as assigned.
- Enforce Campus Recreation policies, procedures, and risk management guidelines to maintain a safe exercise environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current nationally recognized Group Fitness Instructor certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NASM, or equivalent).
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain before employment).
- Experience teaching group fitness classes in one or more specialty formats.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching in a collegiate recreation or community fitness environment.
- Multiple specialty fitness certifications.
- Experience working with participants of diverse backgrounds and varying fitness levels.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of exercise science, fitness programming, and proper exercise techniques.
- Ability to motivate and engage diverse groups of participants.
- Strong communication and instructional skills.
- Ability to modify exercises to meet individual participant needs.
