Job Description

This .75 FTE position works in the Circulation Services Department and reports to the SR Library Information Specialist Late Night Supervisor. This position works four days a week and is responsible for closing the library Thursday through Sunday. The position provides circulation assistance and basic reference help.

Position duties:

  • Provides friendly, efficient assistance to patrons and resolves problems in the circulation unit that cannot be resolved at lower levels. Refers problems that cannot be resolved at the LIS level to a Circulation Services Sr LIS or the Head of Circulation Services.
  • Along with other Circulation Services staff, oversees First Floor Service Desk functions and assists student assistants in providing services at this desk communicating effectively with library patrons, supervisor, and other library staff.
  • Along with other Circulation Services staff shares responsibility of retrieving items from the open stacks at floor level and up to six feet high and performing robot (Automated Storage Retrieval System) picks as well as storing returned items in the robot including reading call number labels which may be upside down in the ASRS (robot retrieval system).
  • Shares with other circulation staff the responsibility for answering the main telephone line for the Miller Nichols Library - answering questions and/or directing calls to the appropriate personnel.
  • Answers basic reference questions and assists patrons with printing, scanning, and basic production software issues in the Information Commons including lifting paper reams, stooping and bending to troubleshoot printer problems, etc.
  • Performs detail-oriented project work, following detailed written and oral instructions, completing repetitive work accurately, and differentiating detailed information. Stays current with Microsoft Office software, especially Excel producing and reviewing a variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form.
  • In the absence of the SR LIS, indirectly supervises the Circulation Services Student Assistants including assigning hourly tasks, training on basic circulation functions, and assisting with tasks including pushing carts of library materials weighing up to 200 lbs., shelving items at floor level and up to six feet high in area which may include small to moderate quantities of dust or mold, etc.
  • Shares responsibility with other Circulation Services staff members for security of the building during scheduled shift. Works with security guard assigned to building and UMKC Police to maintain safe, secure environment for library patrons. Reports facility issues during scheduled shift. Secures building at closing.
  • Oversees stacks maintenance of the Writing Resources and Wolff Collections and assists the SR LIS Late Night Supervisor with stacks maintenance of the 2nd floor general stacks.
  • Oversees organization and weeding of the MNL First Floor Free Book/Book Exchange bookshelves.
  • Oversees computer and desk cleaning (robot area, public computers, KIC scanners, front desk, 114, 121, including periodic cleaning of tables for MNLC foyer tabling events).
  • Oversees organization and spreadsheet for department key box.
  • Maintains/reviews MNLC bulletin board for campus approved postings, removes expired postings, periodically reviews 1st - 3rd floors to remove unauthorized flyers, etc. including coordinating with University Archives to collect flyers from bulletin boards to go into archives.
  • Coordinates with Library Collection Chair to decide if donated books (usually unsolicited donations) are accepted into our collection or go to the Free Book/Book Exchange shelves.
  • Tracks guest log-in instance by keeping log sheets current and entering date/time in Gimlet software.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Shift

Schedule

  • This position works four 7.5 hour days a week and is responsible for closing the library and the Circulation Services Department Thursday, working 4:45 pm to 12:15 am, Friday and Saturday 2:45 pm - 10:15 pm, and Sunday 4:45 pm to 12:15 am, during the Fall and Spring academic semesters.
  • Scheduled hours change based on library's needs and reduced hours/days of operation between academic terms (intersession) and during the eight-week summer term. Works weekday closing schedule during intersession (4 weeks Dec/Jan, 3 weeks May, 3 weeks Aug): Tuesday - Thursday 11:45 am - 7:15 pm, Friday 10:45 am - 6:15 pm. During the 8-week summer session (June/July) works Thursday, from 2:45 pm to 10:15 pm, Friday and Saturday from 10:45 am to 6:15 pm, and Sunday 2:45 pm to 10:15 pm. This position will be asked to shift their schedule during these times and may occasionally cover other shifts in the absence of other employees.
  • The position may choose whether to take a 1-hour meal break (being on-site for 8.5 hours and signing out for a 1-hour lunch) or take a shorter lunch break per the Libraries' Rest Break Policy.
  • Any permanent schedule changes must be approved by the Supervisor.

Flexible Work Arrangements

  • This position is responsible for closing the library and the circulation department four days a week and for assisting patrons via the library's main phone line and at the First Floor Service Desk. Anything outside of this regular schedule is considered a Flexible Work Arrangement.
  • The UMKC University Libraries support flexible work arrangements in keeping with the Flexible Work Arrangement Policy. Flexible work arrangements should support the mission, goals and functional role of the employee, department, and university. Due to job responsibilities of staffing an in-person service desk, processing physical materials, and in-directly supervising on-site student assistants, flexible work arrangements are limited for this position.
Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to two years' experience in a library setting
  • Successful supervisory experience
  • Successful customer service experience
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $16.05-$18.00/hourly. In addition, this position is eligible for a $1.00 shift differential for eligible hours. See HR-213 Shift Differential for more information.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
