| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
North Carolina General Statute Chapter 116, Article 29A (116-239.5), provided for the establishment of eight university laboratory schools with the mission "improving student performance in local school administrative units with low-performing schools by providing an enhanced education program for students residing in those units and providing exposure and training for teachers and principals to successfully address challenges existing in high need school settings. The laboratory school shall provide an opportunity for research, demonstration, student support, and expansion of the teaching experience and evaluation regarding management, teaching, and learning." |
| Primary Purpose of Position |
As a staff member within East Carolina University's College of Education, the Community School Counselor will collaborate with general educators to cultivate a culture of innovation that supports effective instructional and positive behavior interventions and supports/practices/strategies to promote academic and personal success for all students (including those with disabilities) in the school. Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students. General Responsibilities include:
-Develop, implement and manage a comprehensive school counseling program.
-Create data driven goals and strategies that align with the school improvement plan.
-Integration of the Guidance Standard Course of Study within the school setting
-Consultation and collaboration with the IHC, community providers, teachers, parents and other educators.
-Demonstrate leadership, advocacy and collaboration throughout the school.
-Promote learning and a respectful environment for all of students.
-Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Principal. |
| Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience |
Master's Degree in School Counseling or related field and NC Licensure as a School Counselor required. Experience in individual and group counseling, and conducting classroom guidance. Experience working with schoolwide interventions, behavior modification, classroom management and data tracking for accountability purposes. Qualifying degrees must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

A minimum of 3 years of school counseling experience is preferred. Knowledge of School Counseling program and activities is also preferred. The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with school personnel, parents and community agencies. Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines. Proficient in Microsoft Word. |
