Job Description: The General Maintenance Worker maintains facilities in safe operating condition and performs general maintenance activities. E.g., basic carpentry: securing materials safely using a claw hammer, power drill, nails, screws, and basic wood adhesives; patching holes, delivery of essential fixtures, and furniture assembly; trash removal and disposal; changing light fixtures, and addressing immediate operational and/or safety concerns. This is a Full time, 12 months, 260 day Support Position, reporting to the Facilities & Operations Team. Qualifications:
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Certificates & Licenses: A Valid Virginia Driver's License.
- Experience: Job-related experience is required. Two years of demonstrated work-related experience. Preferred in a school or commercial facility
Essential Functions: Timely response to emergency events to resolve immediate safety concerns, including:
- Door and Window Repair: Fixing door hardware, replacing hinges, adjusting door closers, and repairing or replacing window screens.
- Drywall and Painting: Patching holes in walls, taping, mudding, sanding, and performing touch-up or full-room painting.
- Flooring and Ceiling: Replacing damaged or stained acoustic ceiling tiles, repairing minor sections of vinyl composition tile (VCT) flooring, and fixing loose carpet transitions.
- Furniture and Fixtures: Assembling, repairing, or installing desks, chairs, shelving units, whiteboards, lockers, and cabinetry.
- Safety Inspections: Conducting routine checks on fire extinguishers, emergency exit signs, panic hardware on exterior doors, and playground equipment to ensure safety compliance
- Electrical Maintenance: Replacing burnt-out lightbulbs and ballast units (often converting older fixtures to LED); replacing broken wall switches, outlet covers, and light-switch plates.
- Plumbing Fixtures: Unclogging toilets, sinks
- Attends meetings (e.g. workshops, in-service, etc.) to receive pertinent department updates and directives
- Coordinates with assigned lead and/or supervisor and other trades to complete projects and work orders efficiently.
- Maintains warehouse equipment to ensure items are available and in safe operating condition.
- Prepares documentation (e.g. completed work orders) to provide written support and/or conveying information.
- Timely completion of assigned work orders and ability to escalate tasks that require additional support
- Assist schools during snow details (e.g. shoveling, shown blower, salting sidewalk, etc.)
- Assists Building Engineers during inclement weather events by the timely delivery of snow and ice removal equipment and assisting with shoveling ACPS property
- Assumes temporary building support responsibilities when needed
- Travels to and from ACPS schools and ancillary facilities in accordance with state and local traffic laws
Compensation:
- Pay for this position is on the Support Salary Scale, Grade 10, $17.84 to $21.94 an hour (Additional factors in calculation, including hours, # of days, etc.)
- FLSA Status: Non-Exempt position - This position is classified as non-exempt, meaning it is eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Clearances:
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- Tuberculosis Skin Test.
- Public Health Compliance - Must follow safety and health protocols.
