Job Summary: Under direction of the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, this position assists in performing a variety of non-technical and semi-skilled manual tasks, some of which may be mechanical or building tasks, but requiring knowledge below the journeyman level.
Job Description: ASSIST FACILITY MANAGEMENT JOURNEYMEN:
Assist journeymen in completing service requests/work assignments that require a helper. Assist in the upkeep and repair of all buildings and grounds. Assist in the maintenance of electrical - such as portable tools and appliances, mechanical and plumbing. Assist other personnel as directed by supervisor.
SERVICE REQUEST / WORK ORDER ASSIGNMENTS:
Complete individual maintenance and repair work assignments in accordance with the service request/work order procedures. Work assignments will consist of interior and exterior general building construction maintenance, repairs and alterations. Work requires handling lumber, metal, tools, equipment, and other materials. Work consists of performing carpentry, masonry, painting, glazing, roofing, plastering, plumbing, signage installation, acetylene and electrical welding. Assist in the maintenance and construction of roads, walks, and other work of general maintenance character.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMS:
SHOP OPERATIONS:
Maintain trade shop and storage areas, maintain adequate supply of appropriate tools, materials, fasteners, and other items generally used on a regular basis in the course of performing work assignments. Maintain inventory control system to provide continuous accountability for maintaining adequate stock of materials.
Minimal Qualifications: 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Two (2) years (24 months) of mechanical and/or electrical work experience.
DEPARTMENT PREFERENCES:
One year experience in maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds. Perform carpentry and masonry tasks below the journeyman level. Skill with equipment, tools, material and methods to properly perform assigned duties. Fundamental computer literacy, to include the ability to access e-mail and to input basic data into departmental Work Request software. Ability to perform duties in public places with a minimum of disturbance. Ability to think and act quickly in an emergency. Possess a valid State of Illinois driver's license.
DIFFICULTY/COMPLEXITY:
Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions, and read and interpret plans and specifications. Must have, and be able to demonstrate, mechanical ability and aptitude for repairing a wide variety of components. Must possess ability and willingness to work as directed or with limited supervision, and be able to work independently or within a team. This position requires self-motivation as well as the ability to manage time to perform necessary duties in the time allocated. SCOPE AND EFFECT: Quality of work affects the safety, appearance and functionality of the entire campus.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be mobile, able to maneuver in confined and restrictive utility work areas, have ability to lift and carry up to 80 lbs. construction materials for a distance of no more than ten feet, and be in good physical and mental condition. Must be able to work on ladders, scaffolding, lifts, roofs, tunnels, pits and shafts, and have the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Deals with potentially dangerous chemicals and equipment. With proper safety precautions, the work environment is considered safe. SAFETY: Comply with local, state, and federal regulations as applicable to job duties.
Hours: Monday - Friday: 6:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (Hours may vary depending on departmental needs). Location: NEIU Main Campus (5500 North St. Louis Avenue, Chicago, IL 60625) Setting: Maintenance/Repair Worker is an on campus position, not eligible for Hybrid or Remote work. This position requires a background check. Salary Range $26.15
