Position Purpose
The Rosato lab studies the function and regulation of T cells in distinct tissue environments, with an emphasis on nervous tissue, to be able to contextualize their role in health and disease. And the potential to study how environmental influences drive activity dependent maturation of the nervous and immune systems throughout life. The successful candidate will conduct tests and experiments under guidance from the Principal Investigator and lab members as defined in the lab's research protocols. Responsibilities will include daily laboratory operations, mouse husbandry and tissue collection, designing and executing experiments, applying established methods, procedures, and techniques.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Experience:

  • Associates degree with a major in biological science or related field or equivalent and one year of relevant lab or science experience. Or Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience


Basic laboratory skills:

  • Molarity/dilution calculations, accurate solution formulation, ability to understand and follow basic laboratory protocols independently, willingness to work with mice and infectious agents.
  • Good judgment and good organizational and time management skills.
  • Maintenance of accurate lab notebooks

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a biological science or related field or equivalent.
  • Conducts literature searches and reports on current state of specific aspects of the field related to independent work.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications (Excel, Prism, FloJo, ImageJ)

Description
Laboratory management:

  • Accomplishes daily operations and housekeeping of the laboratory.
  • Orders laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Monitors laboratory equipment and instrument performance; obtains maintenance and repair as necessary.
  • Maintains computerized records associated with laboratory activities.
  • Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.
  • Presents data at lab and departmental meetings.

Mouse husbandry:

  • Manages Skorput lab mouse colony and assists in the management of Rosato lab mouse colony
  • Genotyping mouse strains by PCR
  • Phenotyping mouse strains by flow cytometry
  • Weaning mice
  • Managing accurate databases
  • Monitoring mouse breeding

Description
Experiments:

  • Under guidance from the PI and senior lab members conducts and assists with specified laboratory experiments, utilizing a range of established methods, procedures, and techniques; e.g., flow cytometry and microscopy.
  • Under guidance of PI or senior lab members, accomplishes necessary preparations to include equipment and instrumentation set-up, specimen preparation, etc.
  • Observes experiments while in progress; records observations; troubleshoots as necessary.
  • Reconciles results that are disparate from anticipated findings; re-runs techniques as necessary.
  • Notifies principal investigator of problems associated with experiments, measurements, or analyses and suggests changes to methods, procedures, or techniques as appropriate.
  • Maintains laboratory notebook recording tasks performed.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
  • Collects and analyzes data resulting from experimentation/testing and presents findings to Principal Investigator.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, statistical summaries, etc.
