The Library Technician provides information service such as answering questions regarding card catalogs and assists in the use of bibliographic tools, such as Library of Congress catalog. The incumbent performs routine cataloging of library materials, files cards in catalog drawers according to system used, answers routine inquiries, and refers persons requiring professional assistance to Librarian. This Technician verifies bibliographic information on order requests, works or directs workers in maintenance of stacks or in section of department or division with tasks such as ordering or receiving section of acquisitions department, card preparation activities in catalog department, or limited loan or reserve desk operation of circulation department. Summary Manages special records or archive collections and performs technical information research and retrieval both from a wide variety of collections to meet the information needs of Laboratory staff and external customers. May include performing information research for content across diverse systems and retrieval and distribution of significant quantities of legacy and current classified records, archives or technical reports. Includes developing and maintaining specialized information retrieval strategies including interactions with professional networks and key contacts, capturing metrics to meet objectives of the archives or records management program, and participating in special projects associated with the access and usage of information through project lifecycle. May provide support to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) coordinator, responding to FOIA or other information release requests. Assists in development of organizational procedures and participates in inventories and audits. Distributes information to customers following well-established procedures. A seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of technical information research including a working knowledge of other related fields. Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways. This job is the fully qualified, career-oriented, journey-level Information Research Specialist. Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Contributes to the development of organization's goals and objectives. Works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Determines approach to solutions, plans schedule and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives. Education Position typically requires a bachelor's degree and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. | |
