Job Function Summary:

Involves the supervision of staff and operations to provide technical and support activities for anesthesia, clinical support and / or operating room services. Ensures machinery, equipment and supplies are calibrated, maintained and delivered to units efficiently. Develops and implements operational and service standards in accordance with internal policy and external regulations.

Generic Scope

Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; however, supervisory activities must constitute a primary part of the job. Supervises unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or organizational policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Ensures accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

Custom Scope

Supervises the activities of anesthesia technicians. May also supervise equipment technicians and patient care assistants. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources.

10 Supervises operations and is a resource on escalated customer service or workflow issues
10 Ensures work is performed in compliance with established procedures
10 Implements and evaluates practices to facilitate safe and quality care
10 Inspects work activities to ensure work is performed according to prescribed policies and procedures
10 Trains staff on new procedures
2 Recommends action plans for performance improvement based on staff feedback
2 Assists with administration and management of resources; ensures expenses are maintained within budget
10 Communicates and collaborates with intra-department supervisors and managers (Operating Room, Sterile Processing Department, Infection Control, and Materials Management)
10 Provides input and recommends new processes and workflows to improve safety, utilization and efficiency in surgical areas
2 Oversees stocking and preparing anesthesia and / or operating room equipment and supplies
10 Ensures routine maintenance and safety checks of equipment, cleaning, and disinfecting of equipment after use
2 Manages repair of inoperable equipment
2 Manages the maintenance of documentation for machine testing and quality control documentation, in compliance with quality assurance standards
10 Trains staff, teaching quality and safety techniques
10 Mentors staff in meeting professional goals and developing growth areas
5 Assists management in coordinating staff development, training, and competency assessment
5 Participates in recruiting and orients new employees
5 Evaluates performance and competencies
5 Serves as a role model for staff of technical expertise, professionalism and communication

Salary Information


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
