Summary

The Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) reports to a Senior Technologist or Manager. Under general supervision-and with appropriate training and documented competency-the CLA performs a variety of laboratory testing procedures within an assigned lab section.

The CLA participates in all phases of laboratory operations, including:

  • Pre-analytical
  • Analytical
  • Post-analytical

This role requires a strong working knowledge of laboratory procedures, the ability to interpret test results, and preferably collegiate-level experience in the sciences.

Key Responsibilities Specimen Processing & Testing
  • Receive specimens, verify patient identification, and confirm sample appropriateness
  • Perform add-ons, reprint labels, and aliquot specimens while preventing contamination or mislabeling
  • Load samples onto automation systems and operate laboratory equipment
  • Perform waived testing
Clinical Knowledge & Interpretation
  • Understand clinical tests, methodologies, and proper specimen handling
  • Recognize the clinical significance of test results
  • Collaborate with lab staff to investigate unusual or inconsistent results
  • Escalate complex issues to Specialists or Managers when necessary
Reporting & Documentation
  • Record and report test results to ordering physicians or the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) as required
  • Participate in Quality Management (QM) activities, including documentation of patient safety events
  • Verify accuracy of manually entered data
Operations & Maintenance
  • Perform daily maintenance, calibration, and quality control of instruments and automation systems
  • Troubleshoot operational issues (e.g., order discrepancies, sample integrity concerns)
  • Clean and maintain lab equipment and workspaces
  • Maintain inventory and ensure adequate supply levels
Blood Bank Support (if applicable)
  • Handle and manage blood products safely
  • Support communication between the Blood Bank and Operating Room (OR)
  • Maintain OR blood storage refrigerators and ensure test completion for OR patients
Training & Team Support
  • Assist in onboarding and training of new staff
  • Stay current on new procedures and testing methods
Compliance
  • Adhere to all Quality Management, Safety, Infection Control, and HIPAA policies
Other Duties
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science field (e.g., chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology)
Experience
  • Collegiate-level science experience, preferably in a laboratory setting
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and follow technical procedures accurately
  • Strong computer skills, including navigating systems for multiple laboratories
  • Physical and visual ability to perform and interpret tests
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in both lab and OR environments
  • Exposure to:
    • Biological specimens
    • Infectious materials
    • Chemicals and hazardous substances
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies as needed
Independence & Supervision
  • Works independently within established policies and procedures
  • Refers complex issues to Specialists, Managers, or Directors as appropriate

  • None

Pay Range:

$25.51-$42.09
