Position Summary

Screen and perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages who present themselves for phlebotomy services to determine the need for any special instructions. Via computer, verify billing information availability, enter patient demographic data and test requests. Assess workflow and maintain adequate staffing to perform the necessary phlebotomies as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy on patients of all ages in various inpatient or outpatient locations.
  • Prioritizes and organizes work to meet turnaround time requirements for patient care areas.
  • Greets patients, screens preparedness for tests requested, i.e., fasting or special diet.
  • If patient is adequately prepared, instructs patient to wait to be called.
  • If patient is not prepared, gives appropriate instructions and makes return appointment.
  • Answers phone calls for inquiries about results.
  • Recalls data via LIS and reports by phone.
  • Traces results not yet posted.
  • Makes decisions as to the completeness of specimens/specimen requests.
  • Performs manual computer procedures for releasing orders, entering manual paper orders, canceling, and/or crediting tests ordered.
  • Performs basic front desk functions including appointment check-in, registration, and verifying billing information when needed.
  • Appropriately escalates problems to Supervisor or Manager as needed for assistance.
  • Processes patient specimens for appropriate transport and delivery to the laboratory.
  • Stocks drawing areas and assists other staff in monitoring expendable supplies.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a phlebotomist within the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have technician level knowledge of all areas of the laboratory (such as a certification eligible graduate from an approved technician school or prior work experience) would possess.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • Possess an adequate set of skills related to computer functions including computer language and typing.
  • Knowledge of special handling of specimens required for most tests performed by the laboratory.
  • Know basic chemical symbols.
  • Able to identify appropriate laboratory areas, e.g., Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology, etc.
  • Able to learn over 200 laboratory codes and 50 patient locations.
  • Understand laboratory work flow so pending specimens can be quickly located.
  • Know aseptic technique as applied to the techniques of phlebotomy.
  • Know correct procedure for using standard phlebotomy equipment.
  • Know or be able to learn age-specific psycho-social needs of patients of all ages as it relates to phlebotomy.
  • Able to assess parent cooperation when drawing a child or assess need for special kindness when drawing a compromised adult.
  • Able to learn non-verbal cues in communicating/interacting with patients of all ages.
  • Know or be able to learn basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Basic First Aid and/or CPR certification preferred.
  • Know correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimens so as not to contaminate self, co-workers or the work area.
  • Able to maintain an adequate inventory of expendable supplies notifying the supervisor and/or ordering replacements before stored supplies run out.
  • Exhibit a kindness and caring attitude when working with patients of all ages. Able to respond to patient fears with reassurance.
  • Exhibit a professional attitude when working with the public as well as medical personnel at all levels.
  • The ability to converse in Spanish is highly desirable to facilitate communication with Hispanic patients served by the hospital and clinics.
