Exceptions for higher compensation may be considered based on education, experience, and assessed proficiency in accordance with Department of Human Resources (DOHR) policy. Who we are and what we do:

The mission of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is to serve, secure, and protect the people of Tennessee. The department is responsible for ensuring the safety and general welfare of the public through the operations of its six primary divisions: Tennessee Highway Patrol, Driver Services, Tennessee Highway Safety Office, Office of Homeland Security, Tennessee Advanced Communications Network (TACN), and Administrative Services. Headquartered in Nashville, the department maintains a strong presence statewide with approximately 2,500 employees working across the state.

Job Overview:

The Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) Assistant Director supports the Director in the oversight and administration of federally funded highway safety programs aimed at reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities across Tennessee. This role provides strategic leadership in media campaigns, grant management, contract oversight, and program evaluation, ensuring alignment with state and federal priorities, including National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate, administer, and manage statewide media campaigns and outreach programs to enhance public awareness and support highway safety initiatives.

  2. Oversee complex programs, contracts, and grants, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

  3. Support the Director in planning, directing, and evaluating division programs and staff.

  4. Manage and monitor grant funding, contracts, and claims to ensure timely reimbursements and adherence to the Tennessee Prompt Payment Act.

  5. Supervise program managers and support staff, including performance management and development.

  6. Coordinate with stakeholders, vendors, and partner organizations to advance THSOs mission.

  2. At least five (5) years of experience related to public safety, program management, or law enforcement, including experience in grant administration and supervision.
