ABOUT THE SCHOOL: Located in the heart of Oakland, Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children is a one-of-a-kind educational experience committed to empowering our students to realize their full potential. The School also provides vital early intervention and outreach services to visually impaired students, with or without additional challenges, throughout western Pennsylvania. Founded in 1887, our School is best equipped to care for and educate students with visual impairments. As a private institution chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the School educates approximately 200 enrolled students from 80-85 school districts within western Pennsylvania. POSITION SUMMARY: The Custodial Shift Lead provides cleaning and janitorial services to ensure a hygienic and safe educational and dormitory environment. In addition to performing custodial duties, the Shift Lead oversees the evening custodial team, coordinates daily assignments, monitors quality of work, and serves as the primary point of contact during the shift. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Work Schedule: Year-Round; Sundays through Thursdays from 3:00pm to 11:00pm Payrate: $26-27 per hour depending on education, certifications, and experience RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership & Oversight
- Assign and coordinate daily cleaning tasks for evening custodial staff.
- Ensure all assigned areas (restrooms, classrooms, therapy areas, dorms, dining areas, offices, etc.) are completed according to established standards.
- Inspect work for quality, safety, and completeness.
- Provide guidance, coaching, and training to team members as needed.
- Address minor performance or attendance concerns and report ongoing issues to the Facilities Director.
- Serve as the primary contact person for facilities-related needs during the evening shift.
- Communicate maintenance or safety concerns promptly and accurately.
- Assist in onboarding and training new custodial staff.
- Maintain shift documentation and communicate updates to administration or facilities leadership.
Custodial Duties
- Thoroughly clean assigned areas by mopping/waxing floors, vacuuming carpets, spot cleaning stains, dusting, and cleaning windows.
- Maintain lighting in assigned areas.
- Move furniture as needed.
- Report all needed repairs.
- Drive school vehicles as assigned.
- Maintain grounds, including snow removal.
- Assist with room setups, transportation, and maintenance as needed.
- Support emergency situations as required.

- Utilize safe lifting techniques and ensure team compliance with safety standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The Shift Lead Custodian will be assigned to work in a variety of areas throughout the school campus. They may be required to work inside or outside on any particular day work outside may include inclement weather. . The following physical demands are typical:
- 40-hour onsite work week with opportunity for overtime
- Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, lifting
- Pushing, pulling, grasping regularly
- Lifting and moving furniture
- Lifting bags of salt
- Walking and standing most of shift
- Climbing ladders and scaffolding
- Assisting with students in emergency situations, including lifting
- Working outside in all weather conditions
- Completing written documentation
- Sending and receiving email
- Verbal and written communication required

- 2-3 years of custodial experience required
- Previous supervisory or lead experience (2 years minimum) required

Physical Demands / Work Requirements: The following physical demands are typical for a role in this setting:
- Must be comfortable with lifting up to 50 pounds from the floor.
- Ability to lift and carry objects such as equipment, books, stacks of reports, etc, generally items weighing 20 pounds or less.
- Frequent reaching, bending, twisting, crouching, stooping, kneeling, crawling, sitting, and walking including up and down stairs.
- Communicate respectfully with multiple team members.
