Job Description:

The Vice President Revenue Cycle is a core member of the UCSF Health leadership team, responsible for the strategic revenue cycle management to drive optimal performance and support finance objectives. Accountable for the management and operation of the revenue cycle for UCSF Health which includes UCSF Health Enterprise including the Adult Academic Medical Centers, Benioff Children's Hospitals, the Ambulatory Business Unit including Provider Practices, The Community Hospitals, and Affiliate Networks. Responsible and accountable for all aspects of UCSF Health revenue cycle including compliance with UCSF standards and outside regulatory and accreditation agencies. Scope of oversight includes Patient Financial Services, Medical Group Business Services, Patient Access, Inpatient and Outpatient Facility and Professional Coding, Revenue Cycle Quality, Education, and Performance Improvement, and Research Revenue Cycle.

As a member of the senior management team, the VP leads executives in establishing strategy and objectives for improving health system financial performance. Plays a key role in the strategic direction, goal setting and performance management of the revenue cycle. Builds consensus and engages with a broad stakeholder group including medical staff, hospital leadership, and medical group leadership to design, implement, and maintain a high performing and metric driven institutional revenue cycle. Directs large, multi-dimensional initiatives collaborating across entities and departments.

Accountable for aligning revenue cycle operations across UCSF and reporting on key metrics. Takes responsibility for the accuracy and underlying drivers of revenue cycle information and reports. Serves as a senior advisor to leaders, providing financial information for decision-making. Reports to UCSF Health's Senior Vice President Finance and Chief Financial Officer. The VP Revenue Cycle ensures a high level of financial coordination between the UCSF Health Leadership, and other joint ventures and affiliates. Works in close collaboration with Business Unit Chief Financial Officers and Controllers as well as leaders in Government Reimbursement, Health Information Management, Revenue Integrity, Managed Care Contracting, Compliance, Information Technology Case Management, and others. This position presents and interprets financial information on a regular basis to Senior Management, UCSF Health Committees, and Governance Boards.

Responsibilities of the Vice President Revenue Cycle span the enterprise and require constructive relationships with all UCSF leadership, affiliate partners and outside agencies. This is a senior leadership position that requires a proven background leading healthcare revenue cycle functions, with a strong understanding of hospital operations. Expected to successfully interact, negotiate and build UCSF Health relationships, programs and partnerships with an extremely high degree of autonomy. Recognized as an influential leader that strategically manages change through business planning and program execution to achieve broad initiatives.

Collaborates with executive leadership to identify opportunities for improving cash flow
Develops and executes business plans to maximize revenue cycle performance utilizing information technology and innovative practices
Directs central billing office ensuring multi-entity system integration
Leads efforts to design, develop, and implement integrated systems that ensure accurate capture, control and reporting of patient account data
Ensures soundness of systems
Provides executive leadership and guidance to revenue cycle staff
Provides ongoing mentorship to subordinate leaders
Ensures access to relevant professional development opportunities
Develops succession planning pipeline for revenue cycle leadership
Works with executive leadership to set revenue cycle standards and develop performance goals
Establishes revenue cycle organizational structure to accomplish goals and facilitate growth
Introduces innovations to maximize revenue cycle operations
Leads meetings with physicians, practice operations, revenue cycle management and executive leadership
Applies advanced expertise to advise executive leadership on state-of-the-art systems, industry trends and developments that inform the direction of revenue cycle activities
Maintains knowledge of all applicable regulations and standards to ensure compliance with orders or directives issued by governmental / regulatory agencies or third party payors
Promotes a collaborative, service-oriented culture
Fosters open communication and innovation among staff

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Minimum seven (7) to ten (10) years of senior leadership experience overseeing healthcare revenue cycle functions
  • Demonstrated experience optimizing operations and performance for revenue management and reimbursement
  • Tested and proven executive with background in leading business and strategic planning, organizational development/reorganization, productivity improvement and cost management
  • Expert knowledge of healthcare revenue cycle operations, concepts, and policies with an in-depth understanding of related functions and issues, including coding, registration, billing, reimbursements, aging accounts, contractual adjustments, and charge capture
  • Advanced knowledge of metrics, analytics, and data synthesis in healthcare revenue cycle management to identify trends, produce reliable forecasts and projections
  • Financial management skills, including the ability to analyze financial data for operations, budgeting, auditing, forecasting; basic accounting knowledge; AR and reserve analysis, market analysis; staffing and financial reporting skills
  • In addition to healthcare finance and revenue cycle expertise, a wide breadth of health system operational knowledge is required to succeed in the role
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of hospital operations is crucial
  • Must be able to apply wide ranging understanding of clinical finance and health system operations to think critically and identify areas for improvement
  • Requires a big picture perspective of how a health system operates in order to think strategically about how to integrate revenue cycle services, improve insight into financials and maximize profitability
  • Applies broad hospital operational knowledge, revenue cycle expertise, and strategic thinking to advise health system leaders and integrate revenue cycle functional units across the organization
