Supervises Student Academic Advisors who provide professional level academic advice to students. Provides technical assistance to subordinates on complex issues such as exceptions to policy, recommendations to change department policy, and precedent-setting actions. Participates with department management in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for Student Academic Advising. May represent the student academic advising function on committees and other organization entities.

Directs Student Academic Advisors who are providing the full range of academic advising to department students and service to department chairs / deans and faculty

Supervise the work andprovide guidance to Clinical Placement Coordinators to ensure smooth operation for the clinical preceptorship program.

  • Contact and communicate with clinical preceptors - approx. 500+ annually, additional 100+ quarterly
  • Communicate with 150 students for clinical preferences, skills, availability, and experience
  • Maintain database of available preceptors
  • Develop organizational relationships/partnerships with new sites
  • Email graduates to identify new preceptors
  • Recruitment of prospective preceptors
  • Match students with appropriate clinical placements and preceptors based on program and site requirements, student strengths, student preferences and schedule

  • Send introduction emails to student / preceptors including student, site, course registration, units, schedule, and expectations for clinical activity and evaluation

  • Generate clinical placements and evaluation reports for directors, preceptors and students; coordinate with SON online tracking program coordinator as appropriate

  • Develop and update student and clinical site tables for grant progress reports, annual reports, and other reports as requested

  • Create, implement and manage the work flow process for clinical placements and onboarding for new faculty, staff and students

  • May personally provide academic advice to students on academic progression and requirements.

Preceptor Support and Development

- Monitor commitment of preceptors (hours annually) and consider nomination to WOS faculty

- Submit nomination letter in collaboration with faculty as needed

- Point person for all preceptor inquiries and concerns

- Organize Helen Martin Preceptor event including coordination of nominees, liaison with family and faculty, and supervise staff in logistical planning

Maintain and Provide E*Value Support and Training

- Provide E*Value intro and refresher courses to students annually

- Train faculty in use of E*Value

- Support students and faculty in use of E*Value

- Review student and preceptor evaluations and flag as appropriate.

- Prepare reports when requested for the department or specialty coordinators including reports for grant reporting, site evaluations, preceptor verification of hours and preceptor evaluations

- Develop new evaluation tools

Preceptor & Site Engagement

  • Coordination and tracking of Training Affiliation Agreements (TAA) with Contracts & Grants department regarding clinical sites.
  • Coordination and tracking of TAA with faculty regarding needed information for clinical sites.
  • Continually recruit preceptors and sites to participate with the UCSF School of Nursing clinical education mission.
  • Quarterly preceptor development newsletter, including gifts and thank yous to preceptors

  • Identify ongoing preceptor engagement activities and educational activities

  • Serve as the School of Nursing liaison with key contacts in over 500 clinical settings.

  • Identify and develop potential new clinical site partnerships congruent with the mission and needs of the School.

Systems Development

  • Take the lead role in developing, implementing and improving a school-wide pre-clinical placement system for pre-licensure and master's students.

  • Maximize the potential of E-Value as a mechanism for storing preceptor and student information.
