Qualifications

Education and Experience: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school and experience equivalent to four years in the specific specialty area in which the position will be working.

Substitution of Education for Experience: Additional qualifying coursework in Education or the specialty area may substitute for the required experience, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of two years.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants for this class must:

  1. Proficient completion of the Department of Human Resources facilitator course and obtaining the credentials of a Certified Facilitator within six months of hire;
  2. Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority;
  3. Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority;
  4. Supply a fingerprint sample prescribed by the TBI based criminal history records check.

Overview

The Tennessee Department of Human Services is announcing a vacancy for a DHS Vocational Trainer in Veterinary Assistant Technology. This position is housed within the Division of Rehabilitation Services and is essential to the mission of the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center in Smyrna. The DHS Vocational Trainer plays a key role in preparing TRC students for successful employment by providing hands-on vocational instruction in a high-demand career pathway.

This position serves as an instructor, mentor, and guide for adult learners with diverse learning abilities as they work toward certifications in Veterinary Assistant Technology Foundations. The DHS Vocational Trainer develops curriculum, designs lesson plans, and creates a supportive classroom environment where students can build both the technical and soft skills needed for workplace success. This role helps students navigate their training experience, gain confidence in their abilities, and access the resources they need to achieve their employment goals.

The Vocational Trainer is central to ensuring that students receive high-quality, industry-aligned training. By modeling professionalism, fostering motivation, and adapting instruction to meet individual needs, this position directly contributes to the growth, achievement, and long-term success of every student in the program.

  • Prepare and revise Vet Assistant Technology Area of Study curriculum based on industry standards
  • Demonstrate effective instructional, classroom management, and active listening skills.

  • Motivate students to reach their greatest potential by creating a supportive and effective learning environment.
  • Identify and adapt individualized teaching methods suitable for the individual needs of students.
  • Ensure students have the resources needed to succeed by obtaining the proper tools and equipment for learning from the appropriate sources.
  • Give recommendations for tutoring to promote a better learning experience for the student.
  • Monitor and analyze student achievement data to assist in modifying, planning, and delivering academic instruction.
