The mission of the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service is to integrate civic engagement into George Washington University's educational work. We promote equity and active citizenship in a diverse democracy, focus GW's resources to address community needs through reciprocal partnerships beyond the campus, and enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship at GW.
The Program Manager for Community-Engaged Scholarship is responsible for developing, organizing, evaluating, and providing professional development for community-engaged scholarship activities at The George Washington University in the University's central office for civic engagement, the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service. The Program Manager works directly with faculty to facilitate academic community service, community-engaged research, and other initiatives that are integrated with faculty research and teaching to improve the quality of life in the community and the quality of learning and scholarship at GW. The Program Manager may supervise a full-time staff and will supervise graduate students and undergraduate students. The Program Manager works with any Nashman Center Faculty or Post-Doctoral Fellows and takes direction from the Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director of the Nashman Center or their designee.
This position will:
- Promotes a comprehensive strategy for service-learning and community-engaged teaching, community-based research, and other community-engaged scholarship at GW.
- Support, enhance, assess, and evaluate community-engaged scholarship, including teaching and learning, research, and creative activities, throughout the university and community.
- Coordinate professional development programs, coach, and facilitate partnerships with individuals, schools, and academic units across the University for community-engaged scholarship and service-learning.
- Manage service-learning partnerships and promote engagement with community partners; facilitate community organization and faculty relationships. Conduct site visits with community partners; investigate opportunities for adjustment or expansion.
- Conduct awareness activities and events, including regular opportunities for faculty and students to present or publish on their community-engaged scholarship projects.
- Advise and manage safety oversight and risk management procedures for assigned programs and support program training for students and faculty in coordination with appropriate GW offices and personnel.
- Develop new service and community-engagement initiatives that meet and advance the goals of the university, the Nashman Center, and the schools and departments at GW. Collaborate internally, in the community, with the Nashman Center, and with other University departments.
- Recruit and supervise multiple part-time graduate and undergraduate student staff; may supervise one or more full-time AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTAs),
- Plan and implement ongoing training for students and VISTAs.
- Publicize activities to internal and external audiences and participate in dissemination activities regionally, nationally, and internationally.
- Communicate regularly with faculty on topics related to faculty professional development, civic engagement, and Academic Service-Learning.
- Supports the administration and coordination of faculty and student awards in community-engaged scholarship.
- Oversee and manage all recruitment and supervision of Civic House first-year Living and Learning Program, including 1-2 courses taken together annually and co-curricular programming.
- Distribute resources for faculty professional development. Support resource development and publications.
- May teach community-engaged courses or programs
- Oversees, implements, and recommends evaluation and assessment programs in and for the Nashman Center as a whole.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned to support the mission of the Nashman Center and GW. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. |
| Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |

| Preferred Qualifications: |
- A doctoral degree is preferred but not required.
- Two years of experience in service-learning teaching and research, or in directly supporting faculty in higher education service-learning, is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse faculty to support engaged teaching or research.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse students to support civic engagement and leadership.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
