LOCATION OF (1) POSITION(S) TO BE FILLED: TENNESSEE STATE MUSEUM, DAVIDSON COUNTY

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school or GED and experience equivalent to two years in one or a combination of the following: any electrical, carpentry, or general construction and fabrication work or visual, graphics design work; any paraprofessional museum work, including the design of exhibit displays; any professional museum work, including the management or touring of historic sites; professional work teaching art, history, or museum science.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Complete a background clearance application which includes releasing all records involving any criminal history and a valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

- Ability to lift and move objects more than 50 pounds.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and other equipment for fabrication.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret design schematics and drawings.

Overview

Under direct supervision, the Museum Preparator is responsible for assisting in installing museum exhibits and fabricating or assembling exhibition assets such as display cases, display furniture, and modular walls, as well as general coordination and administrative tasks. This class differs from the Museum Exhibition Coordinator in that the latter is responsible for design and nominal administration.

Responsibilities

1. Assisting with the installation and deinstallation of all permanent and temporary museum exhibitions; monitoring installation sites for safety.

2. Assisting with the transport and install of exhibition assets including display cases, display furniture, graphics, labels, and modular walls.

3. Performing exhibit installations and repairs while using elevated platforms, ladders, and lifts. Operating forklifts, scissor lift, pallet jack, freight elevators, box truck and other department vehicles.

4. Responsible for fabricating materials for exhibits and museum, along with painting materials and gallery spaces in accordance with institutional standards.

5. Assist with the comprehension and interpretation of design schematics and drawings. Conduct regular cleaning and maintenance of galleries and related spaces. Repairing or updating galleries and related spaces as needed.

6. Assist with inventorying, storing, and maintaining exhibition assets, tools, and equipment. Preparing necessary assets, tools, and equipment for gallery installations and other projects. Responsible for monitoring and reporting issues related to exhibition and museum equipment.

7. Assists with the planning, installing, and adjusting gallery lighting for exhibitions. Ensure prioritizing and planning of exhibitions in order to meet stated deadlines.

8. Assist with delivering, loading, and unloading materials. Supervising and escorting vendors onsite. Collecting invoices and forms from contractors for supplies and sharing delivery tickets, packing slips, and receipts with supervisor.

9. Responsible for adhering to museum standards set forth in the State Museum's Collections Management Policy and other state policies in performance of job duties.

TN Driver Standards
