Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The mission of the College of Education is to prepare and develop professionals in vocational teacher education and information/office education through effective teaching, the dissemination of knowledge, generation and application of research, and service to the educational business communities. The College is committed to the purpose of preparing educational and business professionals who are both academically and technically proficient. The teacher education programs share the additional purposes of preparing professional educators who are reflective in practice, committed to the intellectual empowerment of others, and guided by the larger democratic purposes of American education.
Job Duties
INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University in the College of Education.

The Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute Coordinator will provide professional development in literacy education for both pre-service and in-service educators. Professional learning opportunities will be delivered in a variety of formats based on stakeholder needs, including seminars, conferences, webinars, summer workshops, and community outreach initiatives.
The purpose of each opportunity is to enhance and strengthen best practices in literacy instruction.

Professional Development:

  • Design and deliver professional development in literacy education for preservice and inservice educators across multiple grade levels and instructional contexts.
  • Develop and facilitate professional learning experiences in a variety of formats, including seminars, conferences, webinars, summer workshops, and community outreach events.
  • Assess stakeholder needs to determine appropriate training formats, content areas, and delivery methods for literacyfocused professional development.
  • Create instructional materials and resources that support evidencebased literacy practices and align with current research and state standards.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of professional development offerings through feedback, data collection, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Manage logistics for professional learning events, including scheduling, communication, registration, and coordination of materials.


Collaboration

  • Lead initiatives that strengthen best practices in literacy instruction, including modeling effective strategies and supporting implementation in educational settings.
  • Collaborate with school districts, community partners, and university faculty to coordinate literacy programming and expand outreach efforts.
  • Support the mission of the Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute by promoting literacy advancement and contributing to longterm program planning.
  • Represent the Institute at events and meetings, serving as a liaison to internal and external stakeholders.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Education, the Coordinator will collaborate closely with the Department Chair of Literacy Studies and Special Education and work in partnership with the Spangler Distinguished Professor to advance the mission and vision of the Institute.

The selected candidate will retain their faculty status and receive an administrative stipend. Contingent upon availability of funding.
Minimum Education/Experience

  • Current Faculty appointment (fixed or tenure track) in the College of Education with research or teaching responsibilities that focus on Literacy.
  • Master's degree in Literacy or closely related field.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Demonstrated strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated advanced training and expertise in Literacy instruction.
  • Experience supporting the ongoing professional growth of educators.
  • Knowledge of evidencebased literacy practices and current research.
