DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Equipment Operator with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you will play a vital role in maintaining safe and efficient roadways throughout the year, with particular importance during the demanding winter season. Your work will directly support snow removal, construction activities, and daily maintenance operations that protect the traveling public. This position offers meaningful, hands-on work where teamwork, physical effort, and dedication create visible improvements in communities across Pennsylvania.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Heavy Equipment: Safely operate trucks, plows, and construction equipment to support snow removal efforts and ongoing roadway maintenance.
- Perform Manual and Construction Tasks: Assist with a variety of maintenance and construction activities that enhance roadway safety and infrastructure reliability.
- Conduct Equipment Care: Perform minor repairs, routine servicing, and daily inspections to ensure equipment and vehicles remain in proper working condition.
- Maintain Accurate Records: Complete daily logs and reports that document equipment usage, maintenance activities, and operational needs.
- Support Team Operations: Work collaboratively with your crew to complete physically demanding tasks that require coordination, communication, and commitment.
- Promote Safety: Follow all safety procedures, use required protective gear, remain aware of hazards, and report injuries or incidents immediately.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake (L) restriction removed.
- This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
- All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
- Employees may require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
Additional Requirement:
- This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
