DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Equipment Operator with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you will play a vital role in maintaining the safety and reliability of the Commonwealth's roadways. Your work is especially critical during the winter season, when effective snow removal is essential for protecting the traveling public. In addition to winter operations, you will support a wide range of construction and maintenance activities that directly influence the quality of Pennsylvania's transportation infrastructure. This position involves physically demanding tasks that require teamwork, coordination, and dedication. You will operate heavy equipment, perform routine maintenance and minor repairs, and maintain accurate documentation that supports efficient and accountable operations. Each day, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your efforts contribute to safer roads and a stronger transportation network for communities across the state.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Heavy Equipment: Safely operate trucks, plows, and construction equipment to support snow removal and year-round roadway maintenance.
- Perform Manual and Construction Tasks: Assist with maintenance and construction activities that enhance roadway safety and infrastructure reliability.
- Conduct Equipment Care: Perform minor repairs, routine servicing, and daily inspections to ensure equipment and vehicles remain in proper working condition.
- Maintain Accurate Records: Complete daily logs and reports documenting equipment usage, maintenance activities, and operational needs.
- Support Team Operations: Work collaboratively with your crew to complete physically demanding tasks that require coordination and commitment.
- Promote Safety: Follow all safety procedures, use required protective gear, remain aware of hazards, and report injuries or incidents immediately.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,988.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed. This position requires that E restriction is removed.
- Must possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- Must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
- This position requires employees to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
- This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
- All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
