JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Embark Peer Coaches support incoming first-year students on the autism spectrum as they transition to Penn State through the Embark Penn State summer program (June 7-12, 2026). Embark Peer Coaches represent an integral part of Embark Penn State. Peer coaches will work directly with incoming first-year students on the autism spectrum to support their transition to Penn State through individual and group interactions grounded in an autism-informed coaching-based approach.

Peer coaches will partner with participating students in a thought-provoking and reflective process that supports them in making sense of their experiences, identifying goals, and developing strategies for success. They will help create a supportive, flexible, and respectful environment that recognizes individual differences in communication, learning, and social engagement.

Peer coaches will collaborate with College of Education faculty and staff to support program delivery and contribute to a positive student experience. This role provides an opportunity to develop leadership, communication, and facilitation skills while gaining experience supporting students in a higher education context.

This is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students interested in supporting students on the autism spectrum, student success, education, counseling, or related helper professions.

Job Duties-

  • Peer coaches will be responsible for supporting Embark participants throughout the program week (June 7-12, 2026), including approximately 40 hours of engagement.
  • Peer coaches will engage with students using a coaching approach to support reflection, goal setting, and navigation of academic, social, and campus environments.
  • Peer coaches will assist with program sessions, small group discussions, and campus exploration activities.
  • Peer coaches will help create an inclusive and supportive environment that recognizes sensory needs and varying preferences for social engagement, including supporting access to quieter spaces, breaks, and flexible participation.
  • Peer coaches will work collaboratively with program staff and participate in team meetings and daily coordination during the program.
  • Peer coaches will be required to stay overnight some nights during the program week in the dorms to provide support to Embark students. They will receive free housing and meals throughout the Embark experience. Learning about living and eating on campus are part of the educational experience for participants.
  • Peer coaches will be expected to complete all required paid training prior to the program.

Training and Professional Development-
Peer coaches will participate in paid training prior to the program. Training will include:

  • Coaching as a modality for supporting student success
  • Student success supports and resources within the Penn State context
  • Foundations for supporting students on the autism spectrum in higher education
  • Strategies for facilitating conversations, building connections, and supporting group engagement

Requirements and Qualifications-

  • Applicants must be current undergraduate students at Penn State (preference for students in the College of Education).
  • Applicants must demonstrate an interest in supporting students on the autism spectrum and student success in higher education.
  • Peer coaches should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with a thoughtful, patient, and respectful approach to working with others.
  • Peer coaches must be dependable, responsible, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Peer coaches must be able to commit to the full program schedule (June 7-12, 2026). They also need to complete all paid asynchronous training hours (~10 hours online) and attend the in-person training days (June 3rd and 4th).
