The Machinist Supervisor is responsible for leading daily machine shop operations while remaining an active, hands-on machinist. This role oversees shop workflow, material procurement, inventory control, and job tracking to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to quality standards. The supervisor works alongside machinists, provides technical guidance, and maintains accountability for productivity, scheduling, and shop organization. What you will be doing: Shop Oversight & Leadership
- Supervise daily operations of the machine shop
- Assign work and prioritize jobs based on deadlines and shop capacity
- Provide technical direction and hands-on support to machinists
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment
- Enforce company safety and quality standards
- Train and mentor machinists at all skill levels
- Evaluate performance and support skill development
Hands-On Machining
- Perform advanced machining alongside shop personnel
- Assist with complex setups, repairs, and fabrication
- Troubleshoot machining issues and equipment failures
- Serve as technical lead on high-priority or critical jobs
- Maintain expert-level machining capability
Job Tracking & Workflow Management
- Track job progress, labor hours, and completion timelines
- Monitor productivity and adjust workflow to meet deadlines
- Coordinate scheduling of shop work and field assignments
- Communicate job status to management and stakeholders
- Ensure accurate documentation of completed work
Materials & Inventory Management
- Order raw materials, tooling, and shop supplies
- Maintain appropriate stock levels
- Track material usage and inventory
- Coordinate deliveries and vendor relationships
- Reduce waste and control shop costs
Equipment & Maintenance Oversight
- Schedule preventative maintenance on machines
- Coordinate repairs and service for shop equipment
- Ensure tools and machinery are properly maintained
- Recommend equipment upgrades and improvements
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Required:
- 6+ years machining experience, including advanced manual machining
- Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience
- Expert blueprint reading and precision measurement skills
- Strong troubleshooting and decision-making ability
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Strong organizational and communication skills
Preferred:
- Formal supervisory or management training
- OSHA or industrial safety certification
- Inventory or materials management experience
- Field machining or industrial service experience
