Fiber Optics Technician

Position Summary:

We are looking for a Fiber Optics Technician in two locations (San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA) to support the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), which is actively involved in the full Life-Cycle support of fiber optic networking support for the United States (U.S.) Navy. This includes Research and Development of new technical capabilities, Ship Construction support for all classes of Navy Warships, and Operations and Maintenance of fielded fiber optic cable systems and plants. This is future work that is expected to start in Q4 of 2026.

Clearance Required:

  • Must be a US citizen with a DoD Secret security clearance


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME) in the areas of fleet logistics, test equipment support and procedures, and in-depth experience working with the Type Commander (TYCOM) maintenance offices, shipyard/planning yard maintenance offices, regional maintenance operations, and shipboard maintenance personnel.
  • Provide direct fleet support to conduct fiber optic related technical assistance, assessments, and troubleshooting during visits for multiple platforms such as United States Coast Guard, Fast Frigate, CVNs, LHAs, LHDs, LSDs, LPDs, DDGs, DDG 1000, CGs, LCSs, Columbia-Class Submarines, Los Angeles-Class Submarines, Virginia- Class Submarines, Sea Wolf-Class Submarines, Ohio-Class Submarines, as well as to any platform, land-based, or airframe requested by the Government.
  • Provide surface and sub-surface ship availability monitoring and coordinate with site maintenance coordinators and the Navy maintenance community to support the scheduling and streamline the coordination of all ship and fleet activity interactions between the Fiber Optics Section and those activities.
  • Conduct material assessments of the Fiber Optic Cable Plants (FOCP) on all ship platforms with deployed fiber optic capabilities in support of the Fiber Optics Group.
  • Assess ships' force capability for fiber optic repair, provide assessment of personnel certifications/materials/tools/test equipment to support fiber optic troubleshooting and repair, provide fiber optic technology familiarization sessions, inform ship's force with FOCP access processes/controls, inform ship's force about FOCP configuration management documents, and provide over-the-shoulder support to ship's force as they troubleshoot fiber optic issues or conduct fiber optic repairs on multiple Navy platforms.


Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Three (3) years of experience in engineering, technical, installation, coordination, and Quality Assurance (QA) services to support fiber optic systems and technology insertion with at least one (1) year of experience with Navy Shipboard Fiber Optic Cable Plants (FOCP).
  • Problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to describe technical implementations
  • Ability to organize work activities to ensure timely completion of assigned responsibilities
  • Ability to create/describe work activity estimates, progress and issues
  • Motivated, self-starter who is able to thrive in a fast, rapidly changing environment
  • Desire to learn
  • Ability to foster positive work relationships with customers, co-workers, and visitors


Physical Demands and Expectations:

  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing; occasional prolonged sitting
  • Ability to speak, read, hear and write, with or without assistance
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment
