General Job Description Job Summary IES Residential is seeking a self-motivated, detail-oriented HVAC Estimator to support our HVAC divisions by developing accurate and timely cost estimates for residential projects. This role is well suited for early- to mid-career HVAC professionals who have hands-on residential HVAC experience, such as installers or service technicians, who are looking to transition into an office-based role. The ideal candidate brings practical field knowledge along with the ability to work with technical drawings and digital estimating tools. The HVAC Estimator works closely with HVAC Designers and Division Managers to review project requirements, evaluate system layouts, and prepare accurate material and labor estimates that support successful installations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Analyze project plans, specifications, and design documents to determine the scope of work. Perform material, labor, and equipment takeoffs for residential HVAC systems including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, ductwork, thermostats, and related components. Apply practical knowledge of HVAC installation methods to ensure estimates reflect real-world jobsite conditions. Prepare comprehensive and competitive project proposals, including cost breakdowns for labor, materials, subcontractors, and equipment. Track and update material costs, templates, and pricing data within estimating systems. Evaluate risks, assumptions, and potential issues within project documentation. Collaborate with Division Managers and clients to clarify project details and present estimates. Maintain organized records of all estimates, correspondence, and supporting documentation. Ensure compliance with industry codes, regulations, and company standards. Minimum Education None Minimum Years of Experience 2-4 Specific Qualifications Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent required. Experience in residential construction. Prior hands-on HVAC experience as an installer, technician, or field supervisor is strongly preferred. Practical knowledge of residential HVAC systems, installation processes, and components. Proficient in reading and interpreting construction drawings, technical manuals, and project specifications. Skilled in writing professional reports and business correspondence. Effective verbal communication skills; able to clearly present information and respond to inquiries from managers and clients. Comfort working with office software and digital technical tools. Competent in basic algebra and geometry; able to calculate quantities such as area, volume, and percentages accurately. Capable of conceptualizing project requirements from limited or preliminary information. Able to follow instructions delivered verbally, in writing, or through diagrams and technical schematics. Familiarity with HVAC codes and local compliance standards. Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple estimates and tight deadlines. Technical Skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams). Familiarity with HVAC design and estimating software such as Wrightsoft, AutoCAD, or similar platforms is preferred. Experience with digital estimating tools (e.g., Accubid Anywhere or similar) is a plus but not required. General computer literacy and ability to adapt to new software systems. Work Environment This position is based in an office setting and requires extended periods of computer use. Occasional visits to job sites may be necessary for project review or coordination.
