Job Summary

The position coordinates all aspects of emergency medicine clinical trials and research projects. Studies are conducted in a variety of therapeutic areas within the field of emergency medicine. In this position, the Senior Clinical Research Coordinator is responsible for the conduct of multiple clinical trials and research studies, including (but not limited to) recruitment, screening, enrollment (includes administering informed consent), data collection and management, study audits and monitoring visits, study closeouts, lab specimen processing, sponsor communications, and IRB and contract budget submissions. The Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining study datasheets/case report forms and research binders.

The Coordinator also provides general tasks and support related to the departmental research program as required, such as: attends bi-weekly research meetings, maintains departmental databases, etc. The Coordinator must have ability and willingness to work in an intense emergency room setting and must be comfortable interacting with patients. Position requires excellent verbal and written communications skills. Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices and the ability to conduct all research tasks following GCP guidelines, as well as university, state and federal policies and regulations regarding clinical research is essential.

The Coordinator must be willing to receive job-related training and education as necessary, which may sometimes require overnight travel.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Certification as a Clinical Research Professional having completed the training and passed either the certification exam offered by the Society of Clinical Research Associates or the Association of Clinical Research Professionals; if not certified at time of hiring, certification should be obtained within 6 months of start date.
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or have a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Prior experience conducting clinical research.
  • Experience and sufficient knowledge to record medical histories, measure vital signs, and administer questionnaires.
  • Knowledge and understanding of "Good Clinical Practices" for clinical research.
  • Knowledge and understanding of federal, state and university regulations for clinical research and Institutional Review Board guidelines.
  • Understanding of informed consent process, and ability to properly conduct informed consent when enrolling patients into studies.
  • Ability to read and understand clinical protocols.
  • Ability to learn new health/disease entities sufficient to conduct studies.
  • Ability to read and understand the electronic health record, and collect data relevant to research projects.
  • Ability to pay careful attention to detail to ensure accurate and thorough data collection, maintenance of research records, and strict adherence to study protocols.
  • Communication skills to work effectively with research subjects, research colleagues in the Department, physicians, hospital and clinical personnel, research sponsors and representatives, and research staff at other affiliated sites.
  • Advanced level computer skills for the use of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and Epic.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and resourcefulness when interacting with a diverse population of patients.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and elicit information from patients, patient's families, physicians, hospital staff and a wide variety of health care professionals with varying levels of ability to understand.
  • Sufficient written communication skills to create reports and IRB documents that are accurate and generally free of typographical errors.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, initiative and resourcefulness in making sound judgments and solving problems within the confines of strict study protocols, university policies, and federal guidelines and regulations governing human subjects research.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and function under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple clinical studies, coordinate multiple tasks and to appropriately prioritize workload. Blood/urine specimen processing, storage and shipping.
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and procedures to effectively interpret and accurately compile data according to study protocol.
  • Proficiency with common laboratory equipment such as pipettes, centrifuges, biosafety hoods, etc.
