BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR, TECHNOLOGY & LIFE SCIENCES

The Business Development Director is responsible for driving market growth, revenue generation, and long-term client partnerships in support of McGough's corporate growth and profitability goals. This role develops new client relationships while strengthening existing partnerships across the Technology and Life Sciences sectors.

The Director serves as a strategic market leader, aligning national and regional business development initiatives with the company's overall growth strategy. This position collaborates closely with Operations, Preconstruction, Marketing, and national and regional leadership to lead pursuits, generate accurate pipeline forecasts, and position McGough competitively within the marketplace.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:



  • Bachelor's degree (Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred)
  • 15+ years of related experience with demonstrated success driving profitable growth
  • 5+ years of business development experience
  • Experience within the Architectural, Engineering, or Construction (AEC) industry
  • Strong knowledge of the regional and national AEC market
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport and trust with clients and internal stakeholders


Preferred:



  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Experience in bio-pharma, semiconductor, manufacturing, and/or Food & Beverage sectors
  • Experience with multiple project delivery methods
  • Familiarity with early project development processes (land acquisition, entitlements, finance, proformas)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CRM systems and Adobe Creative Suite tools

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Market Development & Strategy



  • Develop and execute market strategies aligned with corporate growth objectives.
  • Identify and pursue high-value opportunities within the Technology and Life Sciences sectors.
  • Prospect for new clients and solicit RFPs for potential projects.
  • Build and leverage professional networks to identify decision-makers and opportunities.
  • Attend industry events and actively participate in professional organizations.
  • Analyze market trends and competitor positioning to strengthen McGough's differentiators.
  • Promote McGough through industry engagement and community involvement.


Pursuit Leadership



  • Lead project pursuits in coordination with Operations, Preconstruction, and Marketing.
  • Plan and execute persuasive approaches, presentations, and interviews.
  • Serve as a visible representative of McGough in client meetings and interviews.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop proposals aligned with client needs and objectives.
  • Provide strategic interview coaching to pursuit teams.
  • Lead or assist in finalizing project contracts.
  • Advocate for and promote McGough trade services to maximize self-perform opportunities.


Client Relationship Management



  • Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, developers, architects, engineers, and key industry partners.
  • Demonstrate executive presence and strategic thinking in client-facing settings.
  • Act as senior relationship steward throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Facilitate internal and external client debriefs.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure client expectations are met or exceeded.


Business Development Planning & Reporting



  • Track contacts, pursuits, and activities within the CRM system with accurate and timely data entry.
  • Generate pipeline reports, projected RFP receipt dates, and multi-year revenue forecasts.
  • Submit regular progress reports including CRM activity and revenue projections.
  • Coordinate prequalification and vendor registration requirements with Marketing.
  • Facilitate development and execution of a regional strategic plan supporting corporate objectives.


Leadership, Culture & Organizational Contribution



  • Collaborate cross-functionally with regional teams, Marketing, Operations, and executive leadership to ensure cohesive strategy and project execution.
  • Mentor and coach pursuit teams to elevate performance, accountability, and win rates.
  • Contribute actively to the Life Sciences and Business Development teams in support of shared growth goals.
  • Represent McGough professionally and consistently in all internal and external engagements.
  • Support and model Lean principles, continuous improvement, and the McGough Way.
  • Attend project and company meetings and pursue ongoing professional development.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support team and organizational success.


OFFICE AND TRAVEL:

Office: Based in regional office (St. Paul, Raleigh, Dallas).

Travel: Attend regular business development meetings, call on customers and prospective customers, attend industry events, overnight travel involved.

This position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a workstation or during meetings and travel (by plane or car). The employee must be able to lift up to 20 or 50 pounds as needed, demonstrate dexterity to write and use a computer keyboard and mouse, and possess the ability to hear, speak clearly, and distinguish colors on graphs and charts.

The role also requires occasional visits to construction sites, where the employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, uneven surfaces, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures.

In alignment with our commitment to pay transparency, the base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $210,000, excluding fringe benefits or potential bonuses. If you join McGough, your final base salary will be determined by several factors, including geography, location, skills, education, and experience. Furthermore, we place significant value on pay equity among our current team members as part of any final job offer.

Please note that the range provided above reflects the hiring range for this role. Hiring near the top end of this range would be atypical, as we aim to allow room for future salary growth. Additionally, McGough offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package. This includes insurance coverage for medical, dental, vision, life, and disability. We also provide generous retirement plans, voluntary benefit plans, parental leave, substantial paid time off, and holiday pay.
