The Concord and Sacramento offices are looking for an experienced soils technician to help us with a wide variety of grading and foundation projects. We have numerous large grading and foundation projects breaking this summer to complement our other construction projects.

Job Summary

The Northern California's Field Technician supports geotechnical engineering projects by performing field observations, site testing, soil sampling, and documentation for construction projects. This role works outdoors in varying conditions, frequently interacts with contractors and engineers, and plays a key role during construction of major infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field tests such as soil density (nuclear gauge), moisture content, and compaction, molds in accordance with ASTM standards.
  • Collect and properly label soil and rock samples for laboratory testing.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment, tools, and instrumentation.
  • Observe construction activities for compliance with geotechnical recommendations and project specifications.
  • Document and communicate site conditions, activities, and findings through detailed field notes, sketches, and photographic logs.
  • May supervise and review the work of entry-level field technicians.
  • Provide on-site updates to contractors, engineers, clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.
  • Follow Shannon & Wilsons Quality Assurance policy.
  • Follow and promote Shannon and Wilsons safety protocols, field procedures, and Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, some college preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a field and/or lab technician.
  • Proficient in mathematics, including Algebra.
  • Field and construction observation experience is preferred.
  • Current Nuclear Gage Safety and Transport Training*
  • Strong verbal and written communication with the ability to produce accurate field notes and sketches to document work.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • The willingness and ability to travel to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.
  • Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel (required); MS Access (desirable).
  • Valid California's driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying 30+ pounds
  • The ability to travel (drive or fly) to field sites per project needs and job sites locally and out of state.

*Arrangements and payment for training will be made for the successful applicant after their hire date.

Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Senior-Level Field/Lab Technician typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Senior Technical Services level.

Compensation:

The salary range for this job is $35.00 - $50.00 an hour depending on an applicant's education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs.
