Job Designation

The Lab Technician is responsible for the fabrication, testing and characterization of high-tech aerospace ceramic antioxidant coatings (AO coatings), while providing accuracy, productivity, and on-time delivery. Fabrication involves: the handling of raw materials such as resins, powders, solvents, and acids. Testing involves; operating ovens and furnaces, the preparation of specimens, precision weight measurements, and using various analytical instruments.

Job Core Responsibilities

  • Perform duties associated with the manufacture of antioxidant coatings and primers.

  • Perform other tasks properly assigned by Manager of AO Production.

  • Operate; reflux reactors, mix tank/mixer, pH meter, crusher, grinding mill, screener, lab furnaces, hydrometer, pycnometer, turbidity meter, microscope, and particle size analyzer.

  • Follow detailed instructions for weighing, batching, heating, mixing, and packaging. High level of care and attention to cleanliness of glassware, equipment, tools, and instrumentation is required.

  • Perform quality control tests on incoming raw materials, in process ingredients, and products.

  • Assist with set-up, testing and calibration of lab and production equipment.

  • Analyze data and prepare reports. Recognize and report any quality or safety issues.

  • Keep laboratory and production supplies ready by organizing and inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.

  • Keep equipment operational by following installation, maintenance, and operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.

  • Document information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books.

  • Regular, consistent and punctual attendance is required. May occasionally need to work nights and weekends, variable schedule and additional hours as necessary.

  • Adherence to all safety rules. Use of specified PPE as required including appropriate respiratory protection, aprons, coveralls, gloves, face shields, safety glasses/goggles, safety shoes, etc. Responsible to work in a safe manner, to handle chemicals in a prescribed manner, dispose of hazardous materials as required and to keep the work area neat and orderly.

Job Specifications

Education: High School Diploma

Certifications: Vocational training in chemical technology or applied science is preferred or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience in a related field.

Years' Experience: 1 plus years in a lab or production setting is required. Experience in handling chemicals and production batching and bottling of formulations is preferred.

Skills:

  • Skilled in the operation of equipment and instrumentation.

  • Quality Assurance testing.

  • Use of test equipment, hand tools, power tools and electronic controls

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and sketches

  • Able to solve complex problems in situations that are atypical or infrequently occurring based on existing precedents and/or procedures/scientific methods

  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed and complex instructions

  • Effective oral and written communication skills and attention to detail

  • Proficient Microsoft Windows software applications

  • The incumbent must demonstrate a high degree of accuracy in all work performed
