Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Radiological Control Technician to work in our Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Radiological Controls Operations department. All work is performed on-site over multiple shifts at our ATR facility

You will apply a diverse knowledge of radiological control principles, procedures, requirements and related instrumentation to support radiological control operations at ATR. You will report to the manager of the ATR Radiological Controls Operations department.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Perform required radiological surveys for free release of material from Radiological Buffer Areas and Contamination Areas. Complete personnel surveys for contamination; surveys for contamination control, radiation control, airborne radioactivity control; and surveys to categorize waste for shipment.
  • Provide radiological work coverage, radiological work/practices oversight and mentoring: write radiological control work permits (RWP), enforce radiological control requirements, and ensure ALARA principles are followed during work and respond to radiological emergencies in accordance with procedures and GDEs.
  • Document and review, when applicable, radiological surveys and radiological information in logs and on survey maps.
  • Review and provide input for facility procedures concerning radiological control and ALARA implementation.
  • Assist in writing radiological procedures and provide instruction and guidance to junior technicians.
  • Maintain proficiency and qualifications in radiation and contamination control through completion of work, self-study and training activities. Display an in-depth knowledge of Health Physics theory, work practices and instrumentation.
  • Effective implementation of Laboratory Required Documents, Laboratory Wide Procedures, work rules and safe work practices.
  • Support and use the established Integrated Safety Management System principles to ensure work is conducted safely and meets the requirements for Safety, Health and Environmental.
  • Other duties as assigned by Rad Con supervision and management.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Support and use the established Integrated Safety Management System principles to ensure work is conducted safely and meets the requirements for Safety, Health and Environmental.
  • Knowledge of emergency action policies and procedures, methods of reporting and resolving unsafe work practices and conditions and utilizing available cognizant professionals.
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistently safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, local, and company standards.
  • Ability to work extended periods of time in Radiological work areas including wearing the required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (Respiratory protection etc.).
  • Ability to work in hazardous locations such as confined spaces, use required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Ability to perform work in accordance with all applicable laws, codes, procedures, and safety requirements.

Required:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent, and a Technical Certification or equivalent in Radiation Protection.
  • All potential candidates must either be currently DOE Core certified or successfully pass the DOE Core exam administered by BEA.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Job Information:

  • Starting Pay: Jr. RCT: $33.39/hour - RCT: $41.40/hour - Sr RCT: $47.08/hour. (Rates can vary based upon individual work location, clearances, qualifications, and certifications, such as NRRPT. Rates are accurate for current posting and subject to change. These are bargaining unit positions.)
  • ATR-Qualified Pay: Jr. RCT: $34.06/hour - RCT: $42.22/hour- Sr RCT: $49.66/hour (Rates can vary based upon individual work location, clearances, qualifications, and certifications, such as NRRPT. Rates are accurate for current posting and subject to change. These are bargaining unit positions.)
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Working Conditions:

The work environment includes an office, buildings, and a field environment. The field environment may include exposure to adverse weather, working in high traffic areas, potential exposure to radiation work, hazardous chemicals/waste, and noisy and/or loud equipment. Field work may include working with hazards involving the use of ladders, stairs, confined spaces, power tools and equipment which subjects the employee to mechanical and electrical hazards, moving vehicles, and heavy equipment. Varied work locations may expose incumbent to extreme temperatures and UV (sun) exposure. Position requires use of protective clothing and respirator as needed. Position requires irregular hours/overtime, rotating shifts, shifts greater than 8 hours/day, and working alone.
