6:00 am - 2:30 pm; Monday - Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required, as necessary in conjunction with special events.

This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of Position
The Recycling technician supports the recycling department to provide campus waste reduction and recycling services. This position helps keep areas clear of trash and recycling; transports materials to their appropriate disposal locations and prepares the material to be removed from campus.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Duties
The Recycling Technician supports the Recycling Department and its efforts to reduce waste, increase recycling, and maintain the cleanliness of campus by performing duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Operate vehicles and equipment to help process materials (carts, trailers, pallet jacks, leaf blowers, etc.)
  • Perform the majority of the assigned job duties outside for housing and in parking decks.
  • Collect materials and data associated with recyclables and landfill.
  • Report, prepare, and transport diverted materials to designated locations.
  • Ensure that materials are properly sorted and free from contaminants.
  • Maintain neat, clean, orderly and safe equipment and collection locations.
  • Provides backup in other areas as assigned.

Other Work Responsibilities

  • Assist with special events
  • Exert between 10 lbs. and 50 lbs. of force as required to move pallets, bags of trash and recycling, gas-powered blowers, and other supplies and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations of the department.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Experience and knowledge of recycling processes; ability to collect materials and data associated with recyclables and landfill; report, prepare, and transport materials to designated locations and to perform a majority of the work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment such as carts, trailers, and pallet jacks.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Computer experience with knowledge and skilled with Google Chrome, Microsoft Office, and willingness to learn new programs.
  • Ability to effectively work/interact within a campus community and to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid driver's license required. The Recycling technician operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment to the position.
  • Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification.
