Headquartered in Marlborough, MA, IPG has over 4,800 employees in more than 30 locations around the world. We aspire to work together with our employees and customers to apply light in ways that improve life.

Our mission is to develop innovative laser solutions to make the world a better place. To accomplish this mission, we are committed to attracting and retaining the best talent and an engaged and thriving workforce that drives a sustainable future for our company and society.

Working at IPG Photonics you can expect challenging projects, a motivating and friendly environment, and working hand-in-hand with skilled teams of software and hardware engineers.

Job Summary

The Sr. Optomechanical Engineer is a hands-on engineer who contributes to the development, sustaining and introduction of new products within IPG Photonics' Laser Beam Delivery portfolio. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, this role requires active collaboration with optomechanical, electronics, software and manufacturing teams to develop robust, manufacturable solutions that meet performance, reliability, and cost objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key contributor to sustaining engineering initiatives, developing and implementing product design improvements, cost reductions, and process optimizations that enhance product quality, reliability, and manufacturability throughout the lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the design and development of new products and subsystems, from early concept definition through detailed design, prototyping, and production release.
  • Collaborate with optomechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless design integration, system performance, and manufacturability throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, and engineering documentation in SolidWorks, applying GD&T and ASME Y14.5 standards to ensure design accuracy and quality.
  • Perform analyses and design optimization-including tolerance, thermal, structural, and vibration evaluations-to verify robust functionality in demanding environments and optimize overall system performance.
  • Support prototype fabrication, testing, and validation, applying results to guide design refinement and successful transition to production.
  • Expand expertise in mechanical, optical, and thermal design principles for high-power laser and optomechanical systems, while contributing to continuous improvement in product development methods and best practices.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of product development experience, with demonstrated hands-on involvement in design, prototyping, and testing.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD, SolidWorks PDM, and 2D drafting (including GD&T and ASME Y14.5), complemented by a comprehensive understanding of mechanical design and analysis principles
  • Experience with prototype fabrication, testing, and design validation processes.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experience with optomechanical systems, precision mechanisms, or electromechanical assemblies, and familiarity with optical design tools such as Zemax for collaboration with optical engineering teams.
  • Proficiency with finite element analysis (FEA) and thermal simulation tools for structural and thermal validation.
  • Experience with programming or automation tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for test automation, data collection, or analysis.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, injection molding, casting, and additive manufacturing, with emphasis on design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA).
