Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Writing Center Instructional Manager, and in consultation with the Director of Teaching (DoT) and Associate Vice Provost (AVP), responsible for managing and coordinating WC activities including a full range of functions associated with the administration of Entry Level Writing (ELW) and the Upper Division Composition Exam (UDCE) required by four colleges. Maintain confidentiality; and keep instructional manager, DoT and AVP informed of critical important issues.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Experience composing and editing correspondence and other documents for accuracy, consistency of format, spelling, grammar, language and professional appearance and style.
  • Experience researching, gathering and analyzing data, synthesizing and summarizing information from a variety of sources to present the information to others that aids decision-making, offering recommendations and generating reports.
  • Program management experience including managing and coordinating a variety of functions: perform analyses; gather data; develop statistics, convey/discuss data with Dean and others in a large university program or similar environment.
  • Organizational and time management skills to manage work assignments; to establish goals and workload priorities; and to follow through to successful completion with ability to work under pressure of deadlines, respond with flexibility, and maintain composure under heavy workload, frequent interruptions and opposing demands.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to anticipate/identify problems and develop creative solutions.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact and communicate with students, faculty and staff regarding academic requirements and program criteria; and collaboratively and professionally in person, in writing and on the phone, using sensitivity and discretion in handling difficult situations.
  • Knowledge of campus and departmental policies and procedures related to undergraduate programs, such as confidentiality of student records, registration procedures, administrative policies and academic deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with University automated systems such as MyTravel and Student Information System (BANNER), OASIS, CANVAS.
  • Experience and familiarity of QUALTRICS.
  • Knowledge of academic needs and concerns of students in a higher educational setting.
  • Diplomacy and customer service skills to interact with various constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives within UC Davis, the UC system and outside groups.
  • Decision-making skills to work with ambiguities where clear guidelines are not available.

Department Overview

The Writing Center (WC) offers 645+ general education writing courses (entry-level, first-year, and upper division) annually with a teaching staff of 72 Federation faculty, 1 Senate faculty, and 80+ graduate student instructors. The unit also administers the WPS, ELWR and UDCE. The WC offers a suite of writing support services including writing consultations (tutoring) for undergraduate, graduate students, post-docs, and faculty.

The WC administers ELW which serves 1500+ students per year. ELW manages the process that allows students to satisfy the University of California Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR). This position is responsible for the administration and support of the Upper Division Composition Exam (UDCE) and provides back up for the Writing Placement Survey (WPS).

This position is part of 10 diverse operational/academic units in UE which are responsible for leadership in sustaining and improving the quality of undergraduate education and line responsibility for operation of 10 operational/campuswide academic units and associated budgets, namely Academic Advising Enrichment, the Center for Educational Effectiveness, the Center for Leadership Learning, First Year Seminars, Quarter at Aggie Square, Summer Sessions, UC Davis Washington Center, the Undergraduate Research Center, the University Honors Program, and The Writing Center.
