About The Position

The Tax Planning Manager plays a critical role in advancing the tax function of Ameren. This position will lead high-impact strategic initiatives, drive process improvements, implement emerging technologies (including AI-enabled solutions) and ensure Ameren remains compliant, efficient and forward-thinking in a complex regulated environment. This position combines deep technical tax expertise with strong project management skills and the ability to collaborate across finance, legal, operations and regulatory teams. The Tax Planning Manager will help shape the future of Ameren's tax strategy while driving innovation and operational excellence.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and manage enterprise-level income tax projects that support long-term business strategy, regulatory requirements and operational efficiency.
  • Partner with senior tax leadership to identify opportunities for innovation, risk mitigation and value creation.
  • Develop project plans, timelines and deliverables, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
  • Evaluate existing tax processes and identify opportunities to streamline workflows, enhance accuracy and reduce manual effort.
  • Assist with the implementation of AI-driven tools, automation solutions and data-analytics capabilities within the tax function.
  • Collaborate with IT, finance transformation teams and external vendors to ensure successful deployment and adoption of new technologies.
  • Serve as a key liaison during IRS examinations and other regulatory reviews.
  • Coordinate data gathering, documentation and responses to IRS information requests.
  • Develop audit strategies, maintain audit-ready files and support resolution of tax controversies.
  • Conduct complex federal and state income tax research related to Ameren tax issues, including regulated utility operations, corporate transactions and emerging tax law changes.
  • Draft high-quality technical memoranda, position papers and internal guidance for senior leadership.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess their impact on Ameren.
  • Lead tax due diligence for certain renewable energy projects, including investment tax credits, production tax credits and transferability opportunities.
  • Evaluate project structures, eligibility criteria and compliance requirements.
  • Partner with business development, sustainability and legal teams to support renewable investment decisions.
  • Work closely with accounting, finance regulatory affairs, legal and operational teams to ensure tax considerations are integrated into business planning.
  • Communicate complex tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders in a clear and actionable manner.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field from an accredited college or university required. CPA or law degree required. MBA in accounting and/or Masters in Taxation preferred. Seven or more years of progressive tax experience required. Five or more years of supervisory or team/project leadership experience required. Experience working for a Big 4 public accounting firm or a large law firm, as well as experience working in the regulated utility industry, is strongly preferred. Significant experience handling complex corporate tax projects and cross-functional initiatives required. Some state income tax experience preferred. Experience writing and/or reviewing technical tax memoranda required.

Compensation Range:

$131,900.00 - $204,400.00

At Ameren, base salary is one component of a competitive compensation package for employees. Our pay ranges are broad to allow for movement within our organization and to accommodate different skill sets and levels of expertise. We take into consideration a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skills, abilities, experience, education, credentials, and internal equity when determining the base salary offered. Roles are eligible for additional rewards including annual incentive payments based on individual and company performance.
