Overview

NV5 is seeking a motivated and experienced Hydrographic Survey Technician II to support and execute marine and coastal hydrographic survey operations. This role builds upon foundational survey skills and requires the ability to work more independently in the field while supporting data acquisition, processing, and quality control activities. The Hydrographic Survey Technician II works closely with Project Leads, vessel operators, and field teams to ensure survey data meets project specifications and industry standards. This position requires regular travel and hands-on fieldwork in dynamic marine environments and provides opportunities for technical growth, mentorship, and increased responsibility in survey operations.

Work Environment:

    Location: NV5 Geospatial Office in Newport, NC
  • Travel: This position will require periodic travel both in and out of state (up to 50%)

Responsibilities

The Hydrographic Survey Technician II performs and supports hydrographic survey operations using modern survey techniques and equipment. This role includes increased responsibility for independent task execution, troubleshooting routine issues, and supporting junior team members.This position will require frequent travel for extended periods of time both in and out of state based on the requirements of the project's scope.

  • Perform hydrographic data acquisition using multibeam, singlebeam, sidescan, and other geophysical survey sensors
  • Operate and set up precise positioning systems including RTK-GPS, VRS, and DGPS
  • Support survey planning, including understanding project objectives, specifications, and survey methodologies
  • Assist with and coordinate survey mobilization and demobilization, including offset measurements and system calibration
  • Perform data processing, review, and basic quality control to ensure coverage and accuracy requirements are met

  • Maintain organized data management, documentation, and transfer practices

  • Assist with routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and upkeep of survey equipment and systems

  • Work closely with vessel operators and Project Leads to execute line plans and survey approaches

  • Assist with vessel operations and general shipboard duties as required

  • Support and mentor entry-level technicians through on-the-job training

  • Maintain daily acquisition logs and field documentation

  • Prioritize safety of personnel, vessels, equipment, and other mariners at all times



Qualifications

Education / Qualifications:

  • BA, BS, or AAS degree in Geomatics or related scientific discipline
  • 2-5 years of hydrographic or related marine survey experience
  • Demonstrated experience with acoustic survey systems preferred
  • Ability to work independently with limited oversight
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to travel often and perform physically demanding fieldwork

Certifications / Licenses:

  • Small vessel operation experience (with or without USCG licensing) preferred but not required.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
