Land Acquisition Internship - Summer 2026

Location: Springfield, Illinois (Corporate Headquarters)


Hanson is seeking qualified students for our 2026 Land Acquisition Internship Program. This program offers hands-on exposure to real estate acquisition, appraisal support, property research, and relocation services for public and private infrastructure projects. Interns work alongside experienced industry professionals who are committed to mentoring the next generation of talent.

About Our Land Acquisition Discipline

Our land acquisition specialists support clients by:

  • Appraising and evaluating property for public and private projects

  • Negotiating with property owners

  • Supporting relocation efforts and identifying suitable alternative properties

  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and project requirements

Interns will gain insight into how largescale infrastructure projects interact with communities and property owners, and how land is acquired when current site conditions cannot fully support project needs.

General Internship Assignments

As a 2026 intern, you will be trained and supervised by experienced Hanson land acquisition specialists, appraisers, and/or licensed land surveyors. You will:

  • Perform routine land acquisition tasks using standard procedures and documentation

  • Shadow real project operations, including property owner interactions

  • Support data collection, documentation, and reporting for active projects

  • Assist with special assignments that contribute to larger project deliverables

  • Participate in intern cohort activities to build professional networks within Hanson

  • Travel as needed to customer sites, property owner locations, or other Hanson offices

Key Responsibilities

With guidance from Hanson professionals, Land Acquisition Interns will:

  • Prepare standard land acquisition forms using Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Support research and documentation related to residential and commercial property values

  • Collect and assemble property, market, and right-of-way data for reports and studies

  • Perform or verify basic acquisition-related calculations, including financial and appraisal support data

  • Draft memos, letters, and general reports, maintain project records, and support meeting documentation

  • Communicate project status to internal stakeholders such as engineers and project managers in transportation or utility disciplines

Qualifications (2026 Requirements)

To be considered, candidates must:

  • Be actively enrolled in an accredited program in finance, business administration, marketing, law, real estate, land development, architecture, civil engineering, surveying, or a closely related field

  • Preferably have completed their junior year (or be in a comparable stage of a 2-year program)

  • 2-year students may be considered if coursework is aligned with law, architecture, real estate, finance, or if the candidate holds a real estate salesperson or broker license

Key Skills & Attributes

  • Genuine interest in land acquisition, real estate, and/or infrastructure development

  • Strong analytical and mathematical abilities

  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

  • Ability to manage details and work independently with guidance

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed
