Title: Youth Development 4-H Summer Coordinator (continuous posting)

Classification: 0001, Non-Exempt Temporary

Appointment: Temporary Part-time and Full-time hours; approx 8 - 13 weeks

Pay Range: $15.25- $21.00/hour; Depending on education/qualifications/experience

About the Position

A 4-H Summer Coordinator works with the local 4-H Extension Educator and a team of youth and adult volunteers to support and advance the 4-H program in a specific county. The summer coordinator is supervised by and receives work direction from the 4-H Extension Educator.

Location and Work environment:

Positions are located in county Extension Offices across the state.

Work Schedule:

4-H Summer Coordinator positions are contingent on local funding and vary from 8 to 13 weeks in length, with part-time to full-time hours. Positions will begin in mid-May to early June.

Responsibilities may include:
  • Planning, facilitating/implementing, and/or evaluating aspects of 4-H programs (e.g. day and/or residential camps, 4-H experiences during the county fair, educational workshops, county ambassador activities).
  • Recruiting, orienting and guiding volunteers for specific 4-H programs.
  • Coordinating registration and logistics for youth and volunteer participation at county, regional and state events.
  • Communicating with current and potential 4-H families and assisting with media relations.
  • Promoting the 4-H program to potential members, families and volunteers.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Current college undergraduate students are not eligible for this position.
  • Must be at least 18 years old by the start date.
  • Basic experience with word processing, email, and internet browsers.
  • Proficient in oral and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders who reflect our communities, including youth, parents, adult volunteers, and staff.
  • Good problem-solving skills and a solid understanding of risk management.
  • A willingness to become familiar with and work within the philosophy and guidelines of University of Minnesota Extension, the Minnesota 4-H program, and the local 4-H program.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of youth development principles and best practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work and produce expected work products.
  • Ability to adapt to changes (e.g., programming, work priorities).
  • Evidence of ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Education in youth development, sociology, education, volunteer systems management, communication, or a related field.
Highly Preferred qualifications:
  • Two years of full-time experience working with youth, coordinating volunteers, and/or planning and implementing programs/events.
Additional Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • Must complete all required training, including but not limited to Safety of Minors and Civil Rights training.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with University policy.
  • When not in the assigned office location, employees must be reachable with a mobile number at the employee's own expense
  • Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds frequently.
  • Must be able to stand for 90 minutes at a time or sit for 90 minutes at a time. Some days will require multiple hours of standing or sitting.
  • Must complete University of Minnesota payroll paperwork, including an in-person I-9 (identification verification process), and have a successful completion of a background check + MVR (Motor Vehicle Record), before the first day of work.
  • This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25-$21 an hour; Depending on education/qualifications/experience.
