Position Overview


Primary Purpose of the Position
The Department of Communication and Media Studies focuses on the emerging digital forms of media in the 21st Century with emphasis on their significant effects to human and social communication. A greater opportunity to study purposeful communication on a local and global scale is provided by the department to give the students opportunities to produce innovative media products to increase and enhance global-intercultural awareness.

The Department of Communication and Media Studies invites applications for a full-time, nine-month Digital Media Instructor in the College of Arts, Sciences and Education. The start date for this position is August 2026. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, serving as a faculty advisor, mentoring and coaching students inside and outside the classroom; engaging in professional, creative activities that demonstrate innovative use of multimedia in the discipline; facilitating presentations at well-respected professional conferences; serving on committees at the department, College and university levels; College and university service as well as engaging in service to one's professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.

Department Required Skills
Faculty in the Department of Communication and Media Studies seek candidates with demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence in a higher education setting and an ability to implement technologies that engage students in the learning process. We are especially interested in candidates who focus on student success and student learning as evidenced by their instructional delivery, course design and interpersonal engagement.
Required skills include the following:

  • Applicants must hold an M.A. in Communication and Media Studies, or a related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants must have at least three years of successful undergraduate teaching experience at the college/university level and demonstrated ability to teach foundational communication courses as well as depth-area digital media courses.
  • Evidence of professional experience in digital media operations and applications, including television, radio, newspapers/magazines and multimedia storytelling.
  • Demonstrable evidence of teaching undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Evidence of utilizing various technologies and digital software to teach production and multimedia courses that engage students in the learning process.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Faculty in the Department of Communication and Media Studies welcome candidates with a demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, effective discipline specific practices, social justice, media management and digital innovation.

Preferred skills include:

  • Evidence of proficiency in social media applications.
  • Evidence of utilizing Adobe Suite applications to engage students in the learning process.
  • Engagement in professional, creative activities that demonstrate innovative use of multimedia.

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
WSSU seeks committed and engaged full-time faculty members for the Department of Communication and Media Studies who will perform specific duties and responsibilities at a consistently high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:

Teaching and Advising

  • Teach a full load of undergraduate courses in media presentation, studio and field production, digital storytelling, video editing, mass media management, mass media criticism, social media and culture, and other special topics related to communication and media studies.
  • Facilitate high quality, engaging instruction by teaching undergraduate digital media courses via face-to-face, online, and hybrid modalities.
  • Communicate effectively with students and monitor their academic progress through EAB and other student success management systems.
  • Teach each class section, create and present relevant course activities, assess assignments by providing written/electronic feedback in a timely fashion, and evaluate student performance.
  • Engage with students during mandatory office hours each week.
  • Foster student success and assist students in reaching their fullest academic, personal and professional potential.
  • Assist with curriculum development and strategic planning.


Service and Engagement

  • Attend departmental, college and university meetings consistently.
  • Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community.
  • Collaborate with community stakeholders and other professional organizations.
  • Serve on departmental-level committees.
  • Serve on college-level and university-level committees.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations
