Overview

TRC Companies, Inc. is seeking a temporary Natural Resources Technician / Biological Monitor to join our Permitting, Planning and Licensing practice. The Natural Resources Technician will work under the direction of project managers and task leaders in the performance of required field biological surveys and studies, and in-office report writing and other documentation and report to the West Allis, WI office. The position is currently planned to run from the end of March of 2026 through the end of November 2026 but can be extended on an as needed basis.


Responsibilities

  • Perform post construction bird and bat mortality monitoring, Tier 1 & Tier 2 Preliminary Site Evaluations, avian use surveys, and raptor nest surveys for wind farms.
  • Perform field surveys to identify and map wetlands, streams, habitat for protected species of wildlife, and threatened or endangered species of plants and wildlife found in the Midwest.
  • Competent capability or ability to be trained in the efficient operation of electronic field data collection systems such as field tablets and global positioning systems.
  • Preparation of technical reports and compliance statements documenting results of field surveys.
  • Review and understand the scope, schedule, and budget of work to be completed.
  • Prepare field data forms, assist in preparation of reports.
  • Field work/travel is expected to comprise 60% to 90% of the job.
  • Candidates should be healthy and able to perform moderate and strenuous fieldwork involving carrying field equipment, hiking in remote locations, operation of global positioning system equipment, etc.
  • Candidates should also be able to work long hours in the field, up to 10 or more hours in unusual circumstances.
  • Applicants will work on project teams in the performance of scientific studies to support our clients' energy and infrastructure development projects (e.g., electric transmission and distribution systems, renewable energy, other industrial/commercial development).
  • The position will require local/regional travel and the ability to conduct site visits. While not in the field, opportunities exist to assist TRC's technical staff in other disciplines including land use planning, environmental permitting, and regulatory compliance, among others.

Qualifications

  • Hold a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Management, Botany, Zoology, or closely related field.
  • Basic familiarity with plants and wildlife of the Midwest.
  • Strong organizational skills. The successful candidates will be effective in planning and managing his/her work activities, successfully operating within defined scopes of work, budgeted labor hours and schedules.
  • Able to work outdoors conducting biological fieldwork in remote areas and extreme weather conditions. The successful candidate must be comfortable using and operating field equipment such as handheld GPS unit, 4WD vehicles, digital camera, etc.
  • Able to travel regionally. While the position is based in the West Allis, WI office location, projects associated with the position could be located throughout Midwest.
  • Desire to learn and assist in other disciplines a must. Looking for team players can provide assistance on a wide variety of projects which in turn helps diversify the individual's background and capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office suite).
  • Possess a valid driver's license and driving record acceptable to TRC's insurance carrier.
  • Able to work regular and sometimes long hours outside, working in the natural environment.
  • Willingness to work dependably, and an eagerness to learn about natural resources impact assessment, planning, and monitoring.
  • Abide by Company policies and procedures.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

Other Compensation:Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company's annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
