Occupational Summary Assists in the administration and coordination of the technical activities of a scientific research laboratory. Assist the Scientific/Research Laboratory Manager in managing research projects, developing and administering budgets, schedules, and performance metrics. Serve as an advisor to Research Associates, Lab Analysts, and Lab Technicians insuring standard operating procedures and protocols are maintained and applied. Key Responsibilities Research Design, Data Analysis, and Scientific Reporting - 20% * Evaluate and interpret experimental data and prepare comprehensive reports outlining research progress, adverse trends, and evidence-based conclusions. * Collaborate with the Principal Investigator and Lab Manager to design research plans, interpret findings, and prepare scientific manuscripts, figures, and supporting materials for peer-reviewed publication. * Conduct complex and independent investigations involving the planning, development, and implementation of original experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques. * Prepare technical summaries describing methodologies, experimental outcomes, and laboratory productivity metrics. Grant Analysis, Sponsored Research Support, and Proposal Development - 20% * Perform scientific and administrative analysis supporting the R35 research program led by Dr. Mara Serbanescu, including progress tracking, milestone evaluation, and preparation of required sponsor reports. * Assist in the preparation, editing, and coordination of competitive grant submissions in collaboration with additional departmental Princip.al Investigators. * Compile preliminary data, literature summaries, biosketch content, and methodological descriptions for grant proposals, renewals, and progress reports. * Monitor alignment of laboratory activities with funded aims, timelines, compliance requirements, and reporting expectations. * Support development of budget justifications and resource planning in coordination with research and administrative leadership. Laboratory Operations and Technical Procedures - 15% * Collect and document data through observation, experimentation, and operation of advanced laboratory instrumentation and specialized equipment. * Prepare tissues, specimens, and experimental materials for complex analytical and diagnostic procedures. * Coordinate and supervise routine and specialized laboratory techniques to ensure precision, reproducibility, and regulatory compliance. * Provide technical consultation to research staff regarding procedures, instrumentation, and methodological optimization. General Laboratory Management and Financial Oversight - 15% * Manage day-to-day laboratory operations, including ordering laboratory supplies and maintaining appropriate inventory levels. * Track laboratory expenditures and monitor financial activity to support accurate budgeting and responsible resource utilization. * Confer regularly with the Principal Investigator to ensure spending compliance with institutional policies and sponsor guidelines. * Assist with financial forecasting and planning aligned with current and pending grant funding. Supervisory Leadership, Training, and Personnel Management - 10% * Provide orientation, training, supervision, and ongoing management of research personnel, including a research scholar, undergraduate student, and postgraduate student. * Oversee daily laboratory activities to ensure productivity, compliance, and adherence to research timelines. * Participate in recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, mentoring, and performance feedback for laboratory staff and trainees. * Supervise and instruct residents, interns, students, and junior personnel in laboratory methodologies, safety practices, and research best practices. Safety Coordination, Regulatory Compliance, and SOP Oversight - 10% * Oversee implementation, maintenance, and optimization of laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). * Serve as Laboratory Safety Coordinator, ensuring compliance with institutional, environmental health, and regulatory safety standards. * Maintain required controlled substance licenses and associated documentation. * Maintain and update laboratory safety SOPs and training records. * Represent the laboratory during internal and external inspections, audits, and compliance reviews. Policy Development, Quality Improvement, and Strategic Planning - 5% * Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory policies and procedures consistent with institutional and sponsor expectations. * Lead laboratory meetings to communicate procedural updates, reinforce compliance standards, and disseminate evolving research practices. * Manage and coordinate laboratory research projects with responsibility for timelines, costs, methodologies, and resource utilization. * Assist in defining short- and long-range laboratory goals and forecasting infrastructure, staffing, and funding needs. * Represent the laboratory in departmental and cross-institutional collaborations related to funded and proposed research initiatives. Additional Duties - 5% * Perform other related responsibilities necessary to support laboratory research, sponsored programs, and departmental scientific priorities. Required Qualifications at this Level Education/Training: Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology, or other directly related scientific field. Experience: Work requires five years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience. Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $67,532.00 to USD $125,417.00.
