Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety/Emergency Management reports to the Environmental Health & Safety Director and works in collaboration with both the Director and the Associate Director of EH&S, including dotted lines for utilization of EH&S support staff.

This position will manage UNCW's emergency management program, including preparing the university for various natural and manmade events impacting operations. This is a public-facing position for EH&S and UNCW. This position will work with all Divisions on campus, developing proactive plans for emergency management, and working with various stakeholders across the state. On a continuous basis the position will develop relationships within the university in an engaged and confident manner in front of groups ranging from Students to Faculty/Staff and with Senior Administration. On a regular basis, this position will interface with state, local, and federal regulatory and guidance bodies on a variety of emergency management issues.
Duties for this position include, but are not limited to conducting emergency preparedness training and outreach; conceptualizing, creating, and maintaining emergency plans and procedures; analyzing data and preparing reports on UNCW's emergency response capabilities; and making recommendations to benefit UNCW based on reports, observations, and/or audits. This position may supervise additional staff as the University grows into R2 and additional spaces are brought online.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in appropriate scientific, engineering, or public health field or equivalent plus 4 or more years' experience.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Masters Degree, CEM certification or intent to pursue this certification within the next 12 months. Prefer NIMS training, HAZWOPER and HSEEP training.
  • Knowledge of FEMA programs and practices including recovery phase, recordkeeping and submission requirements.
  • Firm understanding of emergency management including the principles of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
  • Able to maintain excellent relationships with partners both within and outside the UNCW community, on a local, state, and national level.
  • Able to prepare written plans with little administrative support and guide exercises/drills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, able to prepare reports, plans and presentations for a wide audience from faculty/staff members to senior administration.
  • Able to remain on call on a 24/7 basis and respond to a variety of emergencies/disasters as needed.
