Position Information

The Parks and Gardens Department is looking for an energetic and innovative candidate to serve as the Environmental Education Program Assistant. The Parks & Gardens Department's mission is to maintain and operate parks and facilities that enrich the lives of the community and promote an overall healthier lifestyle. The department manages and maintains over 2,900 acres including parks & athletic facilities, historic Airlie Gardens, public school grounds and County-owned non-park facilities such as the county libraries, the Cape Fear Museum, NHC Jail and Fire Stations.
Responsibilities for this role include:
- Assists with all aspects of environmental education program to include teaching hands-on outdoor programming in line with NC K-12 Standard Course of Study, revising curriculum, and ensuring high-quality educational programming for participants
- Creates new programming opportunities for school groups, public programming, and outreach
- Assist in the supervision of interns and volunteers to include prioritizing and assigning work, scheduling, and training
- Assist with the operation of the seasonal Butterfly House and Native Wildlife Exhibit to include proper husbandry and care of animals 7 days a week
- Provide daily maintenance of pollinator and forage habitat through weeding, watering, and planting
- Assist with greenhouse operations to grow host and nectar plants for pollinators to be planted within Airlie and other New Hanover County Parks and properties
- Oversee and schedule educational programming for off-site outreach.
- Performs other duties as needed.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.

Hours:
Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Nights and weekends as needed for scheduled programs and special events (Community Outreach, Concerts, Enchanted Airlie, Family Fun Night, Oyster Roast, Blooms & Brews)
Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.
Employment Type:
Full Time, non exempt Salary Information: The hiring range for this position is $17.46 - 23.58 hourly.
Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, Environmental Education, or related field.
- Experience teaching environmental education
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least one year of experience teaching environmental education or related field
- Knowledge of coastal North Carolina natural history and current issues.
- Experience with animal husbandry
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of NC Standard Course of Study for science for K-12.
