Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $84,000 - $105,000.

Job Closing Date

Initial applicant review will begin on or around March 16th, 2025. Posting will remain open until filled.

This position is a 3-year contract and is eligible for full UC benefits.

This position will be hybrid, with a minimum of one day in-person. For training purposes this position may be expected to travel to UCSF. Once Foundations 1 is launched at UC Merced Fall 2027, this position will be expected to have more presence on campus

About the Job

Reporting to the UCM Medical Education Manager, the UCM Department of Medical Education's (DOME) F1 Curriculum & Assessment Supervisor oversees the curriculum staff who work closely with faculty to develop and deliver the (F1) curriculum, as well as leads assessment of students, course evaluation, and continuous process improvement projects to assess and support the program, curriculum, faculty, and students. The Supervisor serves as a bridge between faculty, staff, students, and accrediting institutional administration to ensure a structure that is compliant and promotes an equitable learning environment. The incumbent partners with other curriculum, assessment, and evaluation teams across program sites to develop standard and parallel processes to ensure that faculty and learners are supported and experience the curriculum consistently. Additionally, the Supervisor will oversee the planning and implementation of an innovative clinical skills curriculum, as part of the UCSF Bridges Curriculum in Foundations 1, that includes small- and large-group learning activities, hands-on clinical skills sessions in the clinical environment, simulation sessions, and assessments. The F1 Curriculum & Assessment Supervisor is a talented professional who utilizes their expertise in education and program management to oversee the development and continuous quality improvement of the curriculum.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages the overall delivery and day to day operations of the curricular activities for the DOME. Acts as an advisor to program and departmental management on curricular activities. Provides leadership and maintains strong ties with all levels of educational leaders and staff across program sites, as well as program and University stakeholders. Works with faculty and curriculum staff to develop and organize course curriculum, advising on course development needs. Monitors curriculum development and delivery, as well as teaching and learning activities. This includes:

    • Directly supervising staff that coordinate all curriculum activities associated with ongoing administration of the medical education program.

    • Collaborating with UCSF and DOME leaders to maintain a comprehensive understanding of the F1 curriculum.

    • Partnering with faculty to understand their vision and goals for the curriculum.

    • Working with staff to ensure that each individual component of the curriculum aligns with high level program objectives.

    • Providing guidance to the course faculty and coordinators on course development and improvement, including the creation of course objectives and learning activities.

    • Supervising curriculum staff to ensure course planning is standardized and consistent to meet accreditation, quality, and timeline requirements.

    • Advising and training curriculum staff on supporting learners and resolving curricular issues for Foundations 1 courses.

    • Directly supervises health professions education staff that coordinate all activities associated with ongoing administration of the program. Monitors curriculum, teaching and learning activities, scheduling, and assessment activities support learners and meet standards. Streamlining processes and operationalizing the curriculum support infrastructure for faculty and learners.

    • Developing methods for maintaining effective communication across program sites.

  • In collaboration with UCSF leadership develops, implements, and oversees assessment and evaluation systems, streamlines processes and enforces guidelines to ensure consistency in curriculum delivery and learner outcomes. Monitors activities to ensure curriculum content, as well as the assessment and evaluation processes and policies are aligned and meet UCSF institutional and LCME* accreditation standards. This includes:

    • Developing and overseeing student assessment and course evaluation (including exams) metrics to monitor program performance.

    • Reviewing assessment data and evaluation results to identify curricular areas for improvement, as well as students that may need additional support.

    • Assessing learner / evaluation data trends, compiling and presenting data to program leadership, preparing program progress reports for programmatic and UCSF leadership.

    • Actively leading and participating in continuous improvement efforts including proposing improvements based on insights gained from evaluations.

    • Managing the program database, which may include individual learner files as well as program accreditation documentation, to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and University policies.

    • Auditing databases for accuracy and completeness; using data and analytics to identify, analyze, and resolve problems, which may be operational or educational.

    • Determining the logistical feasibility of new curriculum content including competencies and skills.

  • Partners with the data and technology teams across program sites to develop systems to support Foundations 1 coursework and improve workflows for students, staff, and faculty.

    • Works with IT to plan and implement educational technologies to improve teaching and learning effectiveness of the SJV PRIME+ program.

    • Recommends technology solutions for program curriculum, assessment and evaluation and ensures systems developed are designed and integrated into program needs.

    • Understands UCSF School of Medicine learning platforms to ensure effective and efficient use of technology in the delivery of the F1 curriculum including troubleshooting any non-technical problems for staff and faculty,

    • Actively manage learning platforms, in collaboration with UCSF to advocate for new/emerging needs on learning platforms etc.

    • Understands how other teams are utilizing technology and aligns with them in order to ensure that faculty and learners experience the curriculum in a consistent way.

  • Participates in recruiting and conducts new employee orientation. Recommends changes in staffing and budget to ensure the efficient operation of the program. Evaluates staff performance and competency and defines development goals. Provides guidance on complex and sensitive issues, assigns work, and monitors team progress. Manages staffing needs, including recruitment, hiring, performance evaluations, and professional development to ensure operational efficiency. Recommends actions related to compensation, promotions, reclassifications, discipline, and grievance resolutions.

  • Trains curriculum staff, teaching strategic planning, analysis, and program management techniques. Mentors staff in meeting professional goals and developing growth areas. Assists management in coordinating staff development, training, and competency assessment.

  • Participates in programmatic committees to help develop strategic plans for high-level changes affecting learners. Regularly advises the DOME leadership, UCSF governance committees, UCSF Associate Dean of Curriculum, and UCSF Associate Dean of Assessment on key issues related to both faculty and learner experience in Foundations 1 at UC Merced.

  • May assist with administration and management of resources, approving program-related charges, and communicating significant changes as they occur to DOME leadership.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training. (Required)

  • Advanced degree from an accredited university in a related field. (Preferred)

  • Three years of directly related, progressively responsible experience and/or equivalent experience/training. (Required)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of the health professions education industry, administrative analysis and operations research. Knowledge of assigned program requirements and curriculum.

  • Knowledge of department, organization, HR and university policies and processes. Current knowledge of relevant industry federal, state and local laws and regulations including national accrediting organizations and state and federal licensing and regulatory offices.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in training and guiding employees on educational techniques. Motivates and inspires staff to improve the health profession education services.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment. Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner.

  • Effective communication skills with peers, learners, faculty, and other education program coordinators / managers.

  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.

  • Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical health profession / education concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel.

  • In-depth knowledge of educational software and technologies to promote a wide-range of teaching and learning goals.

  • Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with peers, learners, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff.

  • Ability to collaborate within and across health professions to integrate / coordinate program activities and resolve problems.

  • Proven ability to recruit faculty and integrate learners which requires high-level planning and coordination skills, the ability to think strategically and communicate complex information to multiple stakeholders.
