Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention ( HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities. Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice. Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children's health, rural health, and health equity. HPDP is part of a network of 20 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

This position serves as the Deputy Director of the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention ( HPDP) and reports to the Center Director. Working closely with the Director, the Deputy Director provides Center-wide leadership in strategic planning, research development, and operations to advance the Center's mission and long-term goals. The position supports change management initiatives and helps build organizational structures and policies that promote an effective, collaborative research environment.

The Deputy Director provides oversight of administrative staff, Center operations, facilities, and financial planning. The role supports large, multi-investigator research initiatives, including Center-level grants, by coordinating proposal development processes, facilitating collaboration, and overseeing reporting and planning requirements. The Deputy Director also represents HPDP in campus, community, and professional settings and works with University and external partners to strengthen the Center's research, training, and service activities.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level background in sponsored research administration, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Demonstrated experience in a significant leadership role in an academic environment.
- Strong strategic planning and change management skills.
- Proven ability to supervise staff and foster a collaborative work environment.
- Ability to build strong partnerships across multiple departments, institutions, community partners, and other interest holders.
- Experience supporting large grants with multiple investigators.
- Project management skills, with strong attention to detail and ability to organize/communicate complex information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience with UNC financial systems, including sponsored and non-sponsored funding.
- Knowledge of UNC policies and procedures as it pertains to research.
