The purpose of this position is to provide opportunities for recreational activities and customer service to patrons. This is accomplished by planning, developing, promoting, and implementing recreation programs of a wide scope. It is also accomplished by providing and ensuring a high level of customer service which greets and interacts with customers, registers patrons for programs and memberships, and responds to customer concerns or suggestions. Other duties may include providing various forms of administrative service, scheduling, assisting with special events, the ability to work in a team environment, and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position provides direction to other employees.


Essential Functions

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Coordinates recreational activities by planning, developing, implementing and evaluating programs in the division, recruiting and retaining professional service providers, marketing, processing payment of professional service providers, and assisting in staff scheduling and time entry in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Provides various forms of customer service by providing a safe and welcoming environment, greeting customers, answering questions, responding to concerns, inputting information into computer system and by distributing equipment to members and guests.
  • Provides various forms of administrative service by monitoring equipment safety, inspecting facility for safety and cleanliness, supervising patrons, providing first aid as needed, assisting in membership and class sales, conducting orientations, scheduling of facility space, maintaining records, providing documentation for budget preparation and monitoring the progress of facility financial goals and business plans.
  • Provides direction to other employees by serving as Manager on Duty as assigned, trains and assists with staff training, coaching, mentoring, and selection of staff.
  • Plans and assists with special events by facilitating coordination of events, providing services as required by the type of event, assisting with event set-up and break-down and attending and supervising special events.
  • May develop, plan and implement fitness and wellness components of a wide scope by overseeing fitness equipment/room, recruiting and scheduling fitness providers, coordinating fitness classes/programs, inspecting fitness equipment for safety, researching equipment needs and purchasing as directed.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Bachelor's degree plus one (1) year of relevant work experience
Education in a related field such as Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Therapeutic Recreation, Gerontology/Nutrition, Kinesiology, Sports Management or Physical Education is preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Certification & Other Requirements
  • Valid Texas Class C Drivers License
  • CPR/Frist Aid Certification or ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.

Schedule
  • This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule that includes working evenings, nights, weekends and some holidays.

Physical Requirements
This role requires the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations are available as needed. Typical requirements include:

  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, or reaching
  • Lifting or carrying up to 20-25 lbs.
  • Requires moderate hand and arm coordination (typing, handling small tools)

Work Environment
  • Work is performed primarily in a recreation center fitness facility, including fitness floors, studios, and administrative office areas.
  • Regular interaction with recreation center members, guests, staff, and program participants in a customer service-focused environment.
  • Exposure to moderate noise levels from fitness equipment, music, and facility activity.
  • Work may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on facility hours and program schedules.
  • Frequent movement throughout the facility to supervise fitness areas, assist patrons, and support programs.
  • May be required to assist with set-up and tear-down of fitness equipment, programs, or special events.
  • Exposure to cleaning products used to sanitize fitness equipment and facility spaces.
  • Work may involve both independent tasks and collaboration with supervisors, instructors, and other recreation center staff.
  • Must remain aware of safety practices and respond appropriately to emergencies or patron incidents within the facility.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of fitness principles, exercise programming, and safe use of cardiovascular and strength training equipment.
  • Knowledge of recreation center operations, including fitness programming, facility supervision, and customer service practices.
  • Knowledge of basic health, wellness, and injury prevention concepts.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, emergency response procedures, and risk management within a fitness facility.
  • Skill in supervising, training, and motivating staff and fitness instructors.
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service and building positive relationships with patrons, members, and staff.
  • Skill in organizing and coordinating fitness programs, classes, and special events.
  • Ability to demonstrate and explain proper exercise techniques and equipment use.
  • Ability to monitor fitness areas to ensure safety, cleanliness, and adherence to facility policies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to address and resolve customer concerns in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, instructors, and other departments to support recreation center operations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and use basic computer applications related to scheduling, reporting, and program management.
