The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Office of Private Sector Careers, the Career Counselor provides career counseling and professional development services to students enrolled in Columbia Law School's J.D. and LL.M programs and, as needed, alumni of the J.D. and LL.M. programs.

Responsibilities



  1. Counsels J.D. and LL.M. students on all aspects of the job search, career development and interview process. Conducts practice interviews with students and provides career advice regarding job search strategy; narrative development; drafting career documentation (resumes, cover letters, etc.); preparing for successful interviews; identification of potential legal employers, career paths and work environments most consistent with their personal and professional needs, etc.
  2. Stays abreast of legal recruiting industry trends by periodically reviewing relevant publications and other resources.
  3. Develops and identifies resources helpful to student employment needs, including networking activities.
  4. Assists with the integration of the School's transfer students into the recruitment and employment programs.
  5. Assists with administration of the Office of Private Sector Career's recruitment and employment programs for J.D. students and assists with the recruitment and employment programs for international LL.M. students.
  6. Counsels alumni, as needed, on all aspects of the job search, career development and interview process. Conducts practice interviews with alumni; provides career advice regarding job search strategy; narrative development; drafting career documentation (resumes, cover letters, etc.); preparing for successful interviews; identification of potential legal employers, career paths and work environments most consistent with their personal and professional needs, etc.
  7. Assists with implementation of LLM and JD professional pathway programs and events.
  8. Performs other duties as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required. J.D. or master's degree in counseling or higher education administration strongly preferred. Two to three years' experience, preferably in a law school or legal employment environment preferred. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills required. Computer literacy required. Experience in dealing with professional communities strongly preferred. Some evening work required.
