TRU Waste AKE / Project Chemist

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a TRU Waste AKE/Project Chemist to work in our Waste Management Program. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Research and Education Center (REC) in our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

You will support facilities, operations and R&D programs in the identification and implementation of transuranic waste and environmental requirements to ensure compliance with applicable rules which may include support of regulatory interpretations, resolution of potential or actual compliance issues, and gathering and reporting of data. You will report to the manager for Waste Management Program.

Responsibilities:

• Identify environmental and waste management requirements to ensure compliance with DOE Orders, Federal and State regulations, and various standards (i.e., ANSI, ISO 14001, NESHAP, etc. and DOE Directives, Guides, and Handbooks).
• Evaluate Visual Examination and Non-Destructive Analysis (NDA) data to update AK documents. Resolve discrepancies associated with AK. Evaluate and resolve container historical information with characterization results.
• Access and navigate the performance management system, from Condition Adverse to Quality (CAQ) creation to verification of CAQ closure. Review AK source documents. Review Waste Determination and Disposition Forms for TRU waste and incorporate into AK.
• Perform AK assessments to ensure that AK documentation relating to the management of potentially reactive, ignitable, and incompatible TRU waste materials is adequate, current, and accurately described.
• Communicate with physics personnel/ NDA experts in the determination of WIPP required radionuclide information and in the resolution of AK discrepancies with NDA data.
• Prepare and provide AK briefing updates to waste management personnel, researchers, and operators involved with the generation, treatment, remediation, characterization (physical, chemical, and radiological properties), and packaging of waste.
• Perform chemical compatibility evaluations on radioactive waste; Prepare technical documentation on potential chemical reactions within radioactive waste. Prepare technical documentation on chemical compatibility evaluations within waste streams.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Level 2: Bachelor's degree in chemical sciences, environmental management or engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or master's degree in in chemical sciences, environmental management or engineering
• Level 3: Bachelor's degree in chemical sciences, environmental management or engineering and 5 years of relevant experience, or master's degree in in chemical sciences, environmental management or engineering and 2 years of experience.
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Experience:

• Degree in chemistry preferred.
  • Minor in Chemistry with related experience may be considered.
• 5+ years of national laboratory, radiological waste repository, TRU Waste Acceptable Knowledge experience, knowledge of the WIPP facility and TRU waste experience, or general waste management experience including characterization, certification, and shipment, process chemistry knowledge adequate to predict chemical compatibility or adverse reactions, and demonstrated ability to communicate well (verbally and written)

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment, ladders >6 feet, protective clothing, and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is Official Use Only (OUO) required. Job Information:

• The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($79,344 - $162,732) / Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
• TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
• Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
