Job Summary

This position is for an experienced Civil Engineer for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, NC working in the Civil Design Engineering department.Our department is responsible for the preparation and development of engineering solutions that support operational risk reduction, address equipment obsolescence, and modernize the two-unit BNP nuclear plant site.The team collaborates with other engineering disciplines and cross functional teams to ensure that high quality design solutions are delivered to meet site needs and project milestone requirements.

Employees at this level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with moderate supervision. Candidate is expected to develop new and existing skills and to develop their ability to work with greater independence as time progresses. They have knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts and theories and exhibit sound technical judgment. They will develop civil engineering specific solutions in support of design change packages for power plant equipment upgrade projects, including, but not limited to, piping systems, pipe supports, equipment and component mounting solutions, weak link evaluations, seismic qualifications, foundation design, and reinforced concrete structural integrity evaluations. Individual will prepare Engineering Change (EC) packages, calculations, specifications, procedures, and other technical documents. Will also perform independent design verification reviews of engineering products prepared by peers.Current qualification at a nuclear utility as a Modification Engineer under an INPO Accredited Program and knowledge of Passport or Nuclear Asset Suite for design and work order development is highly desirable. Experience in the Operations department is considered a desirable trait as well. Individual will be required to obtain qualifications as a Modification Engineer, Calculation Preparer, and Design Verifier prior to working independently. Selected individual will function as the Lead Technical and/or Responsible Engineer for various assigned projects as a member of a larger project team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop conceptual designs and specifications for project bidding purposes, evaluate alternative solutions, provide technical support during implementation activities, coordinate design efforts with selected vendors and perform design package reviews of outsourced engineering products.
  • Manage the development, design, and implementation of modifications to the Brunswick Nuclear Plant while working in a team environment.The team also fields questions from operations and maintenance and provides troubleshooting to resolve various plant issues.
  • For plant modifications, the individual will be responsible for developing the scope, technical basis, installation instructions, and testing requirements for modifications installed in the power plant. Ongoing support of assigned engineering changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities is required.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, determine and present recommendations to management to resolve issues.
  • Develop or revise design specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Conduct formal self-assessments and benchmarking to ensure BNP engineering performance remains among the industry's best.
  • Lead or support BNP Engineering during internal and external audits and inspections.
  • Provide general Civil Engineering and emergent issue support during plant outages.
  • Individual will also be required to support the Emergency Response Organization and storm response teams to meet the needs of our clients and the surrounding community.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience

Sr Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
  • Strong oral / written communication skills within a professional environment
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam and desire to obtain PE license
  • Registration/Licensure as a Professional Engineer
  • Background in pipe stress analysis
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Experience in the nuclear utility industry
  • Experience in the 10CFR50.59 process with respect to designing modifications to a nuclear facility.

Specific Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
  • Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions:

Typically, an office environment with some work in the power plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation activities.
