Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

The Aireon Internship Program is an opportunity for students to be a part of the Aireon teams that are making groundbreaking advancements in global air traffic surveillance. As an Intern, you'll begin making an impact on real projects from day one! Come prepared to grow, develop, and learn alongside a team and the leaders of our company. The Aireon Internship program is a 12-week program that runs from May 18, 2026, to July 31, 2026. During the program, interns will have the opportunity to provide valuable support to an Aireon department on a project or important work assignment. Interns will also be provided an opportunity to engage with senior leadership and fellow interns through regular engagement activities.
The Data Science Intern will assist in both data analysis of Aireon's global ADS-B data and development of machine learning models to support Aireon's products and tools (e.g., high-fidelity Aireon Simulator - ASIM). Analysis will support investigating incidents, determining system performance, and supporting algorithm development. Development of ASIM will involve training multiple models using operational data to improve performance and predictions of real-world behavior. The intern will learn about processing large datasets, visualizing complex information, and applications of data science to a large-scale simulator.
What You'll Do

  • Investigating events related to system performance or system outages

  • Supporting development of ML models to extract insights from the data or forecast events and trends

  • Assisting in data visualization to support requests from other departments

  • Developing tools to process and analyze data

  • Assist in algorithm development to support system enhancements

Skills You Will Obtain

  • Real-world experience in chosen field of interest and related topics through multiple hands-on projects

  • Critical thinking and analytical skills

  • Learn about air traffic surveillance technologies with a focus on ADS-B

  • Exposure to orbital mechanics and satellite communication systems

  • Data analysis and data science applications using large data sets

  • Root cause analysis and abstract problem solving

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age

  • Must be currently enrolled in a bachelor's or graduate degree program at an accredited academic institution

  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Desired Qualifications

  • Some experience in programming, preferred languages would be MATLAB and Python
About You
You have an analytical mindset. This position requires a desire to solve problems through critical thinking and creative solutions. You will be looking into abstract problems that do not have a defined process or method to solve.
You are inquisitive. There is a wealth of information available, and this position would be most rewarding to someone who wants to investigate and explore what can be done with our data and system.
You are thorough: This group is considered experts by the company when it comes to analytics, and it is expected that deliverables will be detailed and correct.
About the Team

  • The intern will work with the Modeling and Analysis (M&A) team; a small group of engineers and scientists that focus on processing Aireon's extensive recorded data to support Aireon's mission. The M&A team works closely with System Engineering, Test, Implementation, and other groups to provide data analysis expertise. The team has members locally and remotely and meets weekly to discuss progress on current tasking.
