| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The mission of the School's human resources (HR) office is to provide counsel and guidance and to lead initiatives on behalf of the School. We serve as an adviser to School personnel on HR policies, procedures and systems including Appointments, Promotions and Tenure (
APT); recruitment and hiring; performance management; employee relations; as well as many other areas. We also serve as the liaison between the School and various offices around campus (Provost's Office, Office of Human Resources, Equal Opportunity Office, Office of University Counsel, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, as well as other
UNC-Chapel Hill offices) on personnel issues. |
| Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The HR Consultant serves as a trusted partner and primary point of contact for staff and faculty within assigned departments through the Gillings HR Service Center (
GHRSC). This role delivers high-touch, customer-focused HR support, ensuring a positive and seamless experience for employees and managers. The HR Consultant supports a wide range of HR services including recruitment, compensation, position management, payroll, data integrity, and faculty
APT processes using the school's HR service request system to track and resolve requests efficiently. Responsibilities include initial triage, resolution, and proactive follow-up, while maintaining accurate records and meeting established service level agreements. The HR Consultant provides consistent guidance on HR policies and best practices, builds strong relationships, and acts as a resource for problem-solving. This position also monitors department-specific trends, identifies recurring issues, and recommends process improvements to enhance service delivery.
This position reports to the HR Team Lead and will serve as a backup to assigned HR Consultants within the
GHRSC. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

* Prior professional HR experience.
* Demonstrated ability to manage complex processes and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
* Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
* Experience with
HRIS systems and/or data reporting tools.
* Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Fair Labor Standards Act (
FLSA), Family and Medical Leave Act (
FMLA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (
ADA) |

* Knowledge of Appointment, Promotions, & Tenure process/tracking.
* Knowledge of ConnectCarolina, CarolinaTalent, lnfoPorte and
UNC
TIM.
* Prior experience in a higher education setting.
* Demonstrated knowledge of payroll processes and procedures.
* Prior HR service center experience. |
